Man's Parents Do Secret DNA Test On Newborn Son As They Didn't Trust His Wife

Having toxic family members can be extremely difficult to deal with and may lead to many challenges in the future. While people love and respect their family members exactly as they are, no matter what they do, others decide to put their own boundaries in place. Since everyone’s situation is different, it’s really up to the specific individual to decide which family members to include in his or her life.

A father went to Reddit on Sept. 16, 2021, to voice his frustration about a situation regarding his parents, and asked Reddit users for advice on what he should do next. His parents were never fans of his wife, Sonya, and have continued to shame her. Since his parents did not approve of his wife, the man decided that it would probably be best to limit the amount of interaction they had with his wife. After his wife gave birth to their first child, the man’s parents began reaching out to the couple.

Giving them another chance, the man and his wife welcomed them back into their lives, and it wasn’t long before the parents were making weekly visits to see their grandchild. However, it seemed that the grandparents had ulterior motives for visiting their grandchild so frequently — they wanted to test his DNA to make sure he was really their son’s son. Once the man found out what his parents did, he was furious and told them to leave. They’ve been struggling to mend their relationship ever since. Read on to find out more about this family’s challenging relationship.

Starting off his Reddit post, the original poster (OP) explained how he first met Sonya at a restaurant she worked at as a waitress. After they finally began dating, OP decided to introduce her to his parents, but it didn’t go well. “They voiced out their disapproval after meeting her,” he said. “My parents that think Sonya is only using me to achieve her American dream.” OP told his parents off for having such a close-minded view.

After OP and Sonya got engaged, OP’s family refused to give them their blessing. Fortunately, Sonya’s family was incredibly supportive. “Because of this we decided to elope and only invited my brother and Sonya’s best friends to be our witnesses,” OP explained. After being married for two years, the couple welcomed their first child, a son named Garreth. OP’s parents quickly started to reach out again hoping to have a bigger part in their son’s and grandson’s lives.

“My kindhearted wife didn’t think twice to welcome my parents into our lives,” OP said. “She let them meet our baby 2 days after being discharged from the hospital.” OP’s parents began to visit regularly and it seemed like everything was going really well until one day when it all came crashing down. OP overheard his mother tell Garreth: “Aren’t you the cutest baby ever? I am so glad to confirm you are indeed my grandson.”

She didn’t know OP was in the room and was completely taken aback once he questioned her. OP continued, “Mom sat me down and apologized first before telling me that they had Garreth’s DNA tested to make sure that he’s mine.” He was furious and told his parents to leave his house.

“My mom was very apologetic and said it’s because they don’t trust my wife and that our son looks nothing like me,” OP said. He ended up telling his wife everything that happened two weeks later. “She started crying and it broke my heart,” OP said. “I know how much she tried to win my parents’ approval and what I told her was like a slap across her face.” The couple decided that OP’s parents would no longer be allowed to visit their grandson, even though it hurt his parents’ feelings. OP’s father even called him “ungrateful and cruel,” and continued to bash on Sonya.

While OP thought he might have been too drastic with his parents’ punishment, Reddit users were on his side. Many users chimed in to talk about how his parents were clearly racist against his wife and would potentially act like that toward his son. One user commented, “They will make remarks about that, they will make him feel bad about his heritage and will talk badly about his mother even when he is there.”

Another user agreed, and said, “A relationship with loving, decent grandparents can benefit a child. A relationship with toxic, racist grandparents can harm a child. Part of parenting is protecting your child from harmful people, even if there is a familial/genetic connection.” Even though they are OP’s parents, many people agreed that they shouldn’t be allowed to visit their grandson anymore due to never trusting his wife and ultimately being extremely rude.
