Most people have been in a situation where they’ve found money while walking on the street or while visiting the mall. While most would just keep the cash, it's considered far more ethical to return it to its proper owner. Such is the case of George Condash of Michigan, who found several thousand dollars while on a normal trip to the bank.

George was visiting the drive-thru ATM at Westland Federal Credit Union when he spotted a plastic container sitting in the middle of the lane. Speaking with reporters from WDIV, George said that he stopped his car and picked up the container, which he thought was just refuse left from another motorist.

George felt that he would be a good Samaritan and take the container so that other drivers would not have to swerve to avoid it when they went to the ATM. Picking up the container, George was surprised to see a tag on it saying that it held $40,000.

Parking his car, George walked into the bank to return the money. Placing the money on the bank’s counter, George asked, “Is there a reward for $40,000?” as the employees looked dumbfounded, WDIV continues. Staff thanked George for his kindness and quickly put the container back behind the counter.

The bank later determined that despite the $40,000 tag, the container only had $27,000 in it. Security footage also showed that about 20 minutes before George went to the ATM, a worker with an armored car company accidentally left the container in the drive-thru lane when he was emptying out the ATM, CNN reports.

George has since been praised as a good Samaritan for returning the money. Alicia Stewart, who manages Westland Federal Credit Union, said that $27,000 would have been a major loss for the bank. To show their appreciation, Alicia awarded George with an undisclosed amount of money.

For his part, George feels that anyone would have done what he did if they were in the same situation. When asked if he ever thought about keeping the money, George said that it wasn’t his and he never even considered taking it, WDIV concludes.

What do you think of how George returned the $27,000 he found in the ATM drive-thru? What would you have done if you were placed in the same situation?
