Man Repopulates A Rare, Beautiful Butterfly Species In His Private Garden

Aug 24, 2020 by apost team

Butterflies, like so many other creatures of the earth, run the risk of going extinct. Of course, there are many different species of butterflies in the world. Some species are safe, so far. Others, sadly, find their population decreasing.

The California pipevine swallowtail is a gorgeous butterfly that appeared headed towards extinction. Mercifully, a committed biologist, called Tim Wong, is working on bringing their population up. So far, his work proves successful.

Tim Wong serves as an aquatic biologist at the Academy of Sciences in California. His work is generally not high-profile, but his recent achievements with helping this troubled butterfly species attracted attention. Interestingly, his attempts at saving the beautiful butterfly did not occur at Wong's place of employment. He's saving the butterflies at his home.

After learning that these butterflies' once-thriving population declined, a motivated Wong built a greenhouse on his property. He started cultivating the caterpillars, which then turn into the majestic butterflies. Wong also searched for the core dietary item these butterflies/caterpillars feed on: the California pipevine plant.

The plant, ironically, is quite rare. The San Francisco Botanical Garden was kind enough to give Wong sufficient clippings of the plant to grew them on his own. By growing the plants, Wong can sustain the butterflies he keeps in his greenhouse.

The "average person" might not be aware of how much work it takes to save these butterflies. Many steps become necessary to bring back even a small amount of the population. Wong has been successful so far, which is a good thing for the environment and insect kingdom.

And these butterflies are beautiful ones. The bright shades on blue on the California pipevine swallowtail's body and wings look as if a great artist painted them. No human being had anything to do with the butterfly's incredible look. The appearance is all born of nature.

Sadly, the natural habitat for these butterflies changed. Hence, their population declined. Tim Wong truly performs a good deed here. Without him, these butterflies would be in more trouble than they already are.

Everyone loves a feel-good story. Many people love all the creatures of the earth. Do you know someone who would appreciate hearing the story of Ted Wong and his incredible work with the California pipevine swallowtail butterfly?
