Pop culture is known to evolve as technology becomes more efficient and revolutionary. For those of us born in the 90s or earlier remember the horrible graphics on the first PlayStation while playing Frogger or witnessing the beginning stages of the epic Gameboy franchise. Even before game systems and virtual reality, there were board games.

For people born even earlier, one of the greatest past times was the puzzle. Puzzles were great because there were variations for every age and had themes and pictures that made focusing on building the puzzle for hours worthwhile. Separating the pieces into sections was the old school version of people who color coordinate the apple display at the grocery store for social media. Some people would frame the finished puzzles as masterpieces for the world (more like their house guests) to admire.

There wasn’t anything more satisfying than either watching someone working on a puzzle or completing one yourself. Whether it took five hours or four days, sitting in one space concentrating on completing a puzzle was not only fun, but great for mental development. Luckily, there is still someone who feels the same about this nostalgic activity.

A man dedicated nine months to completing a puzzle in his living room. In a time lapse video on YouTube, you can see the young man setting up and separating the pieces (a very underestimated step in completing puzzles) and working them in sections until they are big enough to join to the other sections. Watching this enormous puzzle being put together took me back to those stormy days with family and friends doing a puzzle and not wanting to move until it was completed. With over 33,000 pieces, this puzzle artist couldn’t possibly finish this puzzle in one sitting. He noted in the video description that it took approximately 350-400 hours over 9 months.

Having a chance to witness this work of art being created is bittersweet. It brought back great memories of unity, friendly competitions, and the days when sitting in one place didn’t involve social media or even a screen. On the flip side, this puzzle master didn’t have the pleasure of putting 33,599 pieces in their proper place and realizing one piece is missing.
