Man Raises Money In Order To Buy Dry Cleaners Employee A Car After Learning Hers Broke Down

A small act of kindness can go a long way. For one man in Michigan, he found this sentiment to be especially true. Muskegon County Commissioner Bob Scolnik has been using the Acme Cleaners dry cleaning service in Muskegon, Michigan, for several years, and has grown to really appreciate everyone who works there despite not really knowing them. He typically only sees the workers in passing each time he drops his clothes off.
Scolnik's job allows him to financially help those in need. After landing his current job position, one employee at the dry cleaning service reminded Scolnik to keep the working class folks in mind. Monique Brown works at Acme Cleaners during the day and at Home Depot at night to do her best to make ends meet. With such a hectic schedule, she relied on her car to get everywhere she needed to go, but it, unfortunately, broke down and Brown was unable to afford the repairs.
Although she was able to get rides either from friends or ride-share services, Brown didn't want to inconvenience anyone. There were even times when she had no other choice but to walk to the places she needed to go. It was clear that Brown was in desperate need of a vehicle.
After hearing about her situation back in January 2019, Scolnik knew he needed to do something to help her out. Scolnik's job makes it easier for him to reach out to others, and it wasn't long before he found a way to buy a car and surprise Brown. Read on to find out more about this heartwarming story.

A Sweet Act Of Kindness
According to 13 On Your Side, Brown, an Acme Cleaners employee, was unable to pay to fix her car after it broke down. She works at both Acme Cleaners and Home Depot to make ends meet. "Between the two jobs, I often put in 14 hour workdays," she said. "It's been a challenge but I always get to both jobs on time." She has relied on her friends and ride-share services to get to her jobs, and has even had to walk from time to time.
She spoke with Scolnik, a long-time customer of the dry cleaning service, about her situation, and he knew he needed to do something to help her. "One day, she started talking to me about the fact that I was now chair of the finance committee for the county with a big budget and that I needed to remember the working people and that struck a chord with me," Scolnik said.
According to 13 On Your Side, Scolnik launched a fundraising campaign on Jan. 8, 2019, so he could buy a car to give to Brown. Just eight days later, he had already raised more than $7,000, and was able to buy Brown a nice used car. He even decorated it with a huge pink bow on top! Brown was completely surprised by Scolnik's kind action and couldn't stop smiling after she saw the car, and even called her family to tell them the amazing news.
"Some people are willing to help," Brown said. "Sometimes your voice and a for-real story help." Scolnik was just as happy to help out. "I hope she's super happy," he said. "She needs a car and I know this will help her."
