Koalas are the national symbol of the country of Australia. Cute and benevolent creatures, koalas can be found in the eastern and southern portion of the Land Down Under. While the marsupials have made headlines in recent months following the devastating brushfires that have gripped Australia, koalas have a much more serious enemy as they go about their daily lives. It is estimated that over 300 koalas die each year from being hit by cars, a startling statistic when one considers that koalas are endangered species. In a now-viral video from 2018, a good Samaritan stopped and helped a mother koala and her baby from being potentially killed on a highway.

In the video, which has been watched over 2.3 million times on YouTube, the anonymous truck driver sees the mother trying to cross the highway with her baby on her back. Stopping his vehicle, the driver approaches the two sweet animals, who look up in wonder at their would-be savior. Gently stroking the mother between her ears, the truck driver comments on the cuteness of the mother-baby duo. While the mom is intent on crossing the road, the truck driver steers them back into the woods, grateful to have helped save the animals from a very dangerous situation.

While this conscientious truck driver was able to save two koalas, many more need our help in recovering from the harm caused by the brushfires. Ecologists and animal experts believe that as much as 30 percent of the koala population in New South Wales has died as a result of the fires, reports the Guardian. While this number is staggering in and of itself, these experts also warn that the consequences of the fires will be far-reaching well into the future due to the destruction of animal habitats.

Thankfully, the people of the world have stepped up in a big way to help the people of Australia care for their large animal population. Sussan Ley, the nation’s environmental minister, said that she is amazed by the response she has received from people around the globe. Minister Ley says that people from everywhere are impressed by Australia’s wildlife caretakers and the habits of the nation’s animals.

In the end, the stories of people helping animals in Australia shows just how much people are willing to do to help these vulnerable creatures. Whether by directing two wayward koalas to a safe path or rescuing animals from the vicious flames, people everywhere want to see the animals of Australia thrive in a safe, happy environment.

What do you think of the video of the truck driver that helped the mother koala and her baby? How do you think we should help the people of Australia recover from the fires?
