Moss, an IT sales manager, told ABC News that he was leaving his local gym in Lyndhurst on June 14, 2016, when he heard a man “screaming about a car in the river.” After Moss saw the sinking SUV in the Passaic River, he made the quick decision to drive across the bridge separating Lyndhurst from Nutley to try to help as “instinct and adrenaline” surged through his body.

Once he arrived at the river, he quickly ripped off his dress clothes and put on his gym shorts before heading into the water. “When I got to the car, I saw that the driver was completely unconscious,” Moss said. “Her seat belt was undone, and she was just floating inside.” He had to work fast and meticulously as he tried to rescue the woman.

According to ABC News, the car door wouldn’t budge at first, but after using all of his strength and might, he was finally able to pry it open and pull the driver to shore. “That was the scariest moment,” the hero revealed. “I knew if I couldn’t get the door open, she would die. I wouldn’t have been able to live with that guilt.”

First responders arrived at the scene shortly after and took the woman, a 50-year-old Cranford, New Jersey resident, to the hospital, where she was treated for non-threatening injuries. Moss was also taken to hospital to treat some cuts on his feet but was released shortly after. ABC News reported that the Nutley Police Department recovered the black SUV from the river later that day.

Moss said that he “Just did what I hope any other person would’ve done," adding, “If there’s anything I hope people get out of this, I just hope they pay it forward.”
