Dogs are often called man’s best friend. They don’t ask for much and in return, they give us loyalty and love. But there are people out there who should never be allowed anywhere near dogs. Animal abuse is all too common and most cases are not even made public.

When Melissa Torrez recently witnessed an act of cruel animal violence herself, she made sure the abuser was punished.

Melissa saw a man riding his scooter in a neighborhood in Mission, Texas. He had his dog on a leash behind him. However, the dog was not walking with his owner. He was cruelly being dragged on the sidewalk behind him. Melissa was shocked. She made sure to capture this moment as evidence to protect this dog from further abuse.

She also took a video of the incident. In the footage, Melissa is heard yelling at the man, threatening to call the cops. The man yells back, “Call ‘em! It’s my dog!”

Soon after the video was posted online, the Mission Texas Police received hundreds of calls from concerned residents, according to CBS News. The man was arrested 15 hours after the video was taken. Mario Cardona, the man in question, was charged with animal cruelty.

Cardona was charged with two Class A misdemeanors for failing to care for the dog properly and for recklessly transporting the dog. A judge set his bond at $10,000. Melissa was praised by police lieutenant Jody Tittle for acting so quickly and capturing evidence.

Tittle told local news outlet WANE, “You know something like this is great because somebody actually provided us with video evidence. Sometimes animal cruelty is hard to prove, you know, as bad as that may sound.”

The dog, named G2, was a German Shepherd mix. He, fortunately, did not suffer any severe injuries and is doing well.

In this case, justice has been served. But many cases of animal cruelty never get punished. Show this video to your family and friends and make sure they are aware of the kind of animal cruelty that is sadly a real problem out there.
