In a story from January 2020, one Michigan family’s uncomfortable, secondhand couch turns out to be stuffed with cash. A piece of furniture that originally only cost $70 had turned out to be the hiding place of over $43,000!

Howard Kirby, a Michigan man went to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore to buy a couch. A month after he got it home to give it a try, he realized the ottoman of the couch was rather uncomfortable. Kirby’s daughter-in-law then decided to unzip the couch's footstool to find the problem and saw it was stuffed with cash.

After his initial urge to keep the money and a consultation with a lawyer who stated that Kirby had no legal obligation to return the money, Howard Kirby decided to contact the resale shop according to The Daily Mail.

After insisting the shop track down the original owners of the loaded coach, Kirby arranges to meet the wife of the family, Kim Faith-Newberry. Faith-Newberry disclosed that the couch had belonged to her grandfather, and he had stashed the money in the couch prior to passing away.

After changing his initial idea to keep the money, Kirby said, "The Holy Spirit just came over me and said, 'No, that's really not yours,'" to NBC.

While others may have kept the money, Kirby felt compelled due to his faith to return it.

“As a born-again Christian, I want to do what Christ would want me to do,” he told local news station MLive and then continued, “and I think that’s what he would want me to do.”

The resale store was used to getting customer returns, but never an item of such high value. In Howard’s case, he purchased a couch, and that was the only reward he wanted to keep.

After the story became more popular, a GoFundMe was set up in response to his kind deed. Tell others about the wonderful heart of Howard Kirby. What would you do if you found the money in a second-hand couch? Let us know in the comments!
