The start of a new family is sometimes a long and complex process for parents. It can take some time for people to finally settle down.

More time can pass due to issues with finances and fertility. However, the challenges faced by one Canadian man stray far off the beaten path.

Nathan Chan decided at the age of 25 he would become a father without the partnership of a mother. He is now 33 years old. Chan explains that he simply has not met the right person with whom he can start a family. He also said he did not want to wait any longer because he did not want to be an old man as a father.

It seems that it would be a simple matter for a single man with stable employment to adopt a child in need of a home. However, Chan says this is not necessarily true. He said that a number of agencies did not even allow him to submit an application. The reason cited to him was mothers were not interested in their child being adopted by a single man.

Chan eventually went on to become the first single man given permission to adopt a child in the province he called home. However, it did not take long for him to realize no child would come through adoption. Chan figured his best bet was to try using a surrogate.

He would soon find the road to surrogacy was just as complicated. He experienced setback after setback, travelled to three countries, visited five fertility clinics, communicated with six potential surrogate moms, and suffered numerous other setbacks.

Among the lowlights of his journey, Chan explains he experienced one miscarriage and a pregnancy loss once it had reached late-term. He says in both cases everyone was able to realize the pain of the surrogate mother but failed to understand the pain he felt.

The quarter of a million dollars and the years of delays experienced by Chan was all worthwhile when he finally received the baby he wanted. Earlier this year, Chan was blessed with a baby girl he named Nanette. The breakthrough came on the sixth surrogacy attempt.

Chan explains that he has never been happier and says all the years of waiting are worth it now. He explains now that he has her, it is his intention to do everything possible to give her the best life she can have.

Chan says he understands some people may feel that since he is only one person his daughter will not receive the support she could get from a traditional family. He says that he will make that up to her much more than double.

Chan is hoping his story becomes an inspiration to other men. He has also decided to have a hands-on effect on the issue by starting his own adoption consultancy business. His mission statement is to provide solutions for individuals who have been stigmatized historically by the adoption system.
