Man Dumps Fiancée For Her Younger Sister — Mother Asks If It's Wrong To Attend Their Wedding

Relationships can be tricky, and not everyone is meant to be together. Breakups are hard, but can sometimes help lead people in the right direction of who they really should be with, or give them clarity on truly finding out who they are. While some people are able to remain friends with their exes, others choose to avoid that situation entirely and do what they can to fully move on.
This was unfortunately not the case for one family. A mother went to Reddit in December 2020 to share some problems that were going on within her family because her youngest daughter Hayleigh was dating the ex-fiancé of her oldest daughter Jennifer. The original poster (OP) said that Jennifer and Sam – the ex-fiancé – unexpectedly called off their wedding as Sam revealed that he was actually in love with Hayleigh. OP never asked for many details but supported her youngest’s decision in finding true love.
However, not everyone was as supportive and forgiving. OP’s husband sided with Jennifer, as she was the one who was left heartbroken and blindsided by her ex and her sister. The situation was only getting worse, as Hayleigh and Sam announced that they were getting married. As the family split on whether they should attend or not, OP announced that she was planning on attending.
This has since caused a huge problem with her relationship with Jennifer, resulting in some tough words being spoken to one another. OP asked Redditors for their advice on if she would be wrong for going to her youngest daughter’s wedding, and was met with some very eye-opening responses.

Starting off her Reddit post, OP said, “My younger daughter (Hayleigh, 28f) is marrying my older daughter (Jennifer, 30f)’s ex-fiancé (Sam).” She explained how Jennifer was mad at her for agreeing to go to Hayleigh’s wedding, stating that OP was “condoning her bad sister’s behavior as always.” However, OP disagreed with Jennifer’s remarks.
She said that after the wedding between Jennifer and Sam was called off, the family found out that Sam and Hayleigh were dating. “I called Hayleigh immediately and I asked her to rethink the relationship,” OP said. “Not only for her sister’s sake, but also because ‘if he could do it once, he could do it twice,’ and I didn’t want her to get hurt.”
While OP is supportive of Sam and Hayleigh’s love for each other, her family is not as happy. In fact, her husband said he wouldn’t give Sam his blessing and wouldn’t walk Hayleigh down the aisle. “I don’t like the situation anymore than my husband or Jennifer do, but they don’t understand that ignoring the reality of it doesn’t make it go away,” OP said.
She asked her husband if he was willing to risk losing his relationship with Hayleigh by not walking her down the aisle, but it just caused more riffs between OP and Jennifer. OP explained, though, that she wasn’t trying to make people pick sides; she just wanted Jennifer to forgive Hayleigh and Sam so she can finally be at peace.
Still, Jennifer pointed out how OP always picked Hayleigh’s side when they were growing up, and it seemed like she hadn’t changed her ways. She also claimed that Hayleigh purposely stole Sam away from her.

OP continued, “She said if I go to the wedding it means Hayleigh was my favorite child all along and that she’ll never speak to me again. I told her that I’m going to the wedding, just as I would’ve gone to hers if she was in that situation.”
However, OP couldn’t help but wonder if she was making the wrong decision by attending Sam and Hayleigh’s wedding. Whe Redditors were asked for their thoughts on the matter, the majority agreed that OP was definitely in the wrong, and called her out for her outlandish behavior toward her older daughter.
One user commented, “Hayleigh is so clearly the golden child here – poor Jennifer. Clueless, foolish OP. You will reap what you’ve sown.” Another said, “It’s so sad that she’s so afraid of risking her relationship with Hayleigh that she won’t even tell her she disapproves, but doesn’t really care that Jennifer will never speak to her again.”
Others pointed out how hypocritical she was to defend Hayleigh’s actions as a 28-year-old seemingly stuck in her ways, while simultaneously trying to convince Jennifer, 30, to move on.
Still, OP defended her actions. She said:
“I’m not supporting the relationship, I’m supporting Hayleigh. Not because of what she did, but because of who she is. That’s my daughter, and no matter how much I disagree with her or Jennifer's actions, I carried both of them inside me and my love for both of them is unconditional. I've supported and comforted Jennifer to the best of my ability, and I will be here to do so until the day I die, but that goes for Hayleigh, as well.”
