When Junior Cook went to his friend Leon Columbe’s lakehouse in Manitoba, Canada to hang out for a few days, he thought he would just be spending his time relaxing at Cross Lake. However, not long after his arrival, he and Leon began to hear strange sounds. When they investigated to figure out what was going on, they made a startling discovery.

The sounds, which seemed like cries, appeared to be coming from a place on the other side of the lake. The pair tried to ignore the sounds, but when the wails persisted, they tried to identify who was making the sound by looking through binoculars. Junior told Leon that he saw what looked like black shapes darting around. The friends speculated that the shapes may be wolves or other animals.

The pair continued with their weekend plans but were surprised to find that the sounds were still echoing across the lake on the following morning. Intrigued, Junior and Leon decided to take a boat to the other side of the lake and see what was going on. The cries got louder as the approached the shore, and they were surprised to see seven tiny puppies crying out in hunger.

Although they were starving, the puppies were also wary of the two men. Junior and Leon went back for food and water and returned to feed the puppies and slowly try to win their trust. After several days of feeding, the men were able to put the puppies into kennels and transport them across the lake to an animal shelter. The seven puppies were named Gilligan, Ginger, Mary Ann, Mrs. Howell, Professor, Skipper and Thurston Howell III after the characters of the TV show “Gilligan’s Island.”

Because of Junior and Leon’s decision to investigate the cries they heard, seven innocent puppies were saved from starvation.
