Man And His Dog Leap Into Water To Save Pups Trapped In Icy Lake

Timofey Yuriev and his dog Kira have never missed a chance to be in each other's company since first meeting a little over a year ago. The pair completes almost all daily tasks together. This list of tasks now includes saving lives.

Last weekend Yuriev, Kira, and Yuriev's wife went for a walk along a lake not far from the family home in New York. The spot is usually one that is peaceful but there was obviously something different on the night the trio traveled along the snow-covered lake.

Yuriev says they heard a woman screaming from somewhere across the lake. He says the three of them moved hurriedly in the direction of the screams to find the source of the problem.

Yuriev explains two Labrador retrievers owned by the woman were walking across the lake when one of them fell through a thin patch of ice. Moments later, the second dog belonging to the woman also fell into the lake. The dogs attempted to climb out of the lake but their efforts were fruitless.

Yuriev knew he would have to act fast as the energy of the dogs was leaving quickly as a result of their struggle in the freezing water. Yuriev is experienced at swimming in frigid temperatures so he took the plunge into the lake. What he did not know was he would not be alone.

"I knew she was going to follow me," Yuriev told The Dodo. "We were going to do it together."

Yuriev says he saw the look in Kira's eyes as he undressed. He said the dog was at his side as he took his dive. And once he began to swim toward the struggling dogs, he said Kira swam next to him.

Yuriev says he was strengthened by the knowledge he was not alone. Yuriev and Kira led the first dog to a solid spot of ice and then returned to rescue the second dog. Yuriev says Kira was not just alone for the ride.

He says she reassured each dog by touching noses with them and then helped lead them to safety. 

The Labrador retrievers were frightened once back on land but were safe and sound. Yuriev and his faithful companion were heroes.

The owners thanked Yuriev repeatedly while fighting through tears of both anguish and joy. Yuriev says Kira had always shown great intelligence and kindness. The dog proved that when someone is in need she is the perfect dog for the job.

Fortunately for us, Yuriev's wife recorded the event and we can all enjoy Yuriev and Kira's heroic act.
