Speranza Animal Rescue helps take care of neglected animals who have been abused by providing them with a loving home on a large farm in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

Even though the rescue sounds like a dream come true for any animal that has been harmed, it turned out to be a frightening nightmare for Mary, the mother donkey.

Deep Depression Sets In

Mary had never been separated from her young colt before. She was incredibly heartbroken by the separation. She had no idea why her son had disappeared and she knew that he still needed his mother.

Mary fell into a deep depression because of the separation. Her new human family became concerned when Mary started to refuse any hay. She wouldn’t even take any treats.

She also started isolating herself. Her ears were lowered and her eyes grew dim. Suddenly, life seemed full of pain and heartbreak to this donkey mother.

Colonel Struggled with Separation Anxiety

The little colt wasn’t doing that great either, even though he was in a place as close to paradise as he could get. He had room to play with plenty of new friends on the acres of meadows.

However, Colonel simply couldn’t enjoy this beautiful place or the attention he was getting from the rescue center. Soon Colonel fell into depression too. He refused to play with the other animals on the farm.

It broke everyone’s heart to hear how the young donkey called out for his mother day and night. Many people hoped that he would simply learn to love the new paradise he called home. However, the grief simply wouldn’t let up.

The young donkey spent hours calling out for his mom as if his heart would stop beating if she wasn’t found.

Mother and Son Reunited!

Janine pitied the young donkey. She knew how hard life had been for so many of her adopted animals.

A few days later, Janine got some pictures of Mary on the new farm. She immediately saw the donkey had lost her luster for life. She was forlorn and was clearly beginning to starve. The hunger strike had no end in sight.

Janine decided it was time to rescue both of them by bringing Mary back to her colt.
