Animal moms are known for their fierce protection of their babies. They are known to do anything to defend their babies, even if it means sacrificing their own lives. Mother cats are no exception to this rule. Cats can be both predators and prey. They have a strong sense of caring for their young.

A mama cat has four kittens

Four orphan baby squirrels need help

A local family found a nest of orphaned squirrels near the animal sanctuary. They brought the squirrels in to be cared for by the staff. The staff realized that the squirrels needed some good mothering, preferably by another animal.

They recalled the mama cat and her kittens. The squirrels were only one month old. Their eyes were not yet open.

The staff at the animal sanctuary introduced the baby squirrels to the mama cat and her kittens. The squirrels were afraid of the cats, and the cats were not sure about the baby squirrels. Because squirrels are the prey of cats, this was an unlikely pairing.

The staff was hopeful that the mama cat would take to the baby squirrels. It took a while, but she eventually adopted the squirrel babies as her own. She started to groom and even feed the babies.

The staff was happy that the mama cat accepted the baby squirrels. They felt that the squirrels have a much better chance of surviving to adulthood if they are cared for by another animal. There is a concern that the baby squirrels might grow into adults that do not fear cats, which could be a problem if they are released back into the wild.
