Just weeks before his untimely passing, Malcolm-Jamal Warner opened up in a rare interview about what he cherished most in life: his family. The actor, best known for his role as Theodore Huxtable on the beloved NBC sitcom “The Cosby Show,” spoke candidly during a May 2025 appearance on the “Hot & Bothered” podcast.
Just weeks later, Warner tragically died at age 54 on July 20, 2025, in a drowning accident, leaving fans and loved ones in mourning. According to sources, Warner passed away while on vacation with his family in Costa Rica.
During the heartfelt conversation, Warner reflected on marriage, fatherhood, and the deep joy he found in both. While he often kept his personal life under wraps, he chose to share how profoundly his wife and daughter shaped his world.
Despite the intimacy of the moment, he made it clear that some details would remain private:
“Obviously I don’t post them. I don’t, you know, I talk about them, because they are obviously the hugest parts of my life, the best parts of my life, best decisions I’ve ever made, but I like to keep them and their identity private. But I love talking about them because I want people to know that it is possible to be happy and to have love and love really be enriching.”
Reflecting on meeting his wife later in life, Warner added:
“I met my wife at 45, so like it’s okay to wait, you don’t have to be in your 20s ... So I talk about them a lot ’cause I’m very proud of my life and that aspect of my life.”

During a heartfelt appearance on the “Hot & Bothered” podcast released on May 22, 2025, Warner offered rare insights into his deeply personal life, including his relationship with his wife and their daughter. The conversation began with Warner recalling a pivotal moment in his relationship with the woman he married in 2017.
“At some point during this time… I was like, ‘If I’m going to have a kid, this is the person that I would want to have it with,’” he recalled.
Though it was early on, Warner said he instinctively knew she was the one.
“If something happened and we weren’t together romantically, she would still be the person that I would want to raise a child with,” he said, adding he had “never, never second-guessed it (since). There was a moment where I realized when people say, ‘When you know, you know,’ that’s what that feeling is.”
Reflecting on their bond, Warner said they both “never second-guessed it. We’ve been together almost 10 years and we have never had a fight, an argument, a raised voice or a harsh word said to one another … And it’s not like we agree on everything.”
Later in the episode, Warner spoke about his 8-year-old daughter and their experience watching “The Cosby Show” together when she was just 4.
“She said, ‘That’s Papa! That’s Papa!’” he recounted, smiling proudly.
He said his daughter also adored Keshia Knight Pulliam’s character, Rudy.
“For the longest time, she actually called the show Rudy’s Family,” he remarked, adding the “most surreal thing is, my daughter and Keshia’s daughter are just a couple months apart, and they are like this (crosses fingers). It’s so crazy.”
