Although all animals are absolutely deserving of love, some animals pull at our heartstrings a little more than others. Animals that go through hardship due to the cruel actions of humans can especially leave a mark on us when we hear their stories. When it comes to elephants, they are one of the most mistreated species of animal on earth.

Unfortunately, that was true of Maya's case as well. But luckily, an organization near Agra, India, Wildlife SOS, gave Maya a second chance at a happy life back in 2010.

Although they are large, beautiful animals that are usually appreciated by the public, they are often treated in the most unfortunate ways by those that keep them in captivity. Sometimes, elephants are kept in shackles and chains that don’t allow them to live the lives they deserve. One elephant knows this side of life all too well.

Back in 2010, Wildlife SOS rescued Maya at the age of 35 years old, according to the organization's website. For most of her life, Maya had been working as a circus elephant where she was made to perform for onlookers, which included dancing after being threatened with a stick and standing on two legs. Suffice it to say that Maya's situation was clearly abusive.

But Wildlife SOS stepped in and found Maya a new life. Once Maya was rescued from the circus and put into Wildlife SOS's care, the organization made sure to take good care of the injured, malnourished elephant, as their website details. In addition to receiving immune boosters, the Wildlife SOS team also gave her footbaths to help heal her injured footpads.

Today, Maya has a much better life at the Wildlife SOS sanctuary where she can roam free with other rescued elephants.

Although Maya had to be rehabilitated, she will never be mistreated again. You can learn more about Maya's story in the video above. What do you think about this poor elephant? Let us know in the comments and pass this inspiring story along!
