Back in January 2019, an iced bald eagle was rescued from Lake Michigan and sent to Wings of Wonder, a non-profit raptor sanctuary, to recuperate before being released back into the wild days later.
When a tragedy strikes, we follow the news keenly to know the fate of those who were involved. Sometimes we are heartbroken when we see some trapped victims struggling to free themselves, or when the rescuers seem to take too long to get to them. It always seems like a race against time. And this happened to one majestic bald eagle the other day.
According to The Detroit News, a group of birdwatchers sighted four bald eagles at the edge of a lake. After a while, three of these splendid birds flew off. As the bird watchers looked at the eagle that was still on the ground, they noticed that he was in trouble. He was trapped. His friends were nowhere to help him. Had they abandoned him in his hour of need?
Who could have imagined that such a power-wielding creature could look so helpless? He must have felt weird and embarrassed too. A symbol of power and might yet unable to take off from the ground, something that he had done a million times before without giving it a second thought.

That is what must have been going on in the mind of the bald eagle that had been trapped by a big ice ball. He was powerless and needed help before it was too late. The birdwatchers realized the life of the eagle depended on how fast they acted. Immediately they realized that they could not free it, they called Wings of Wonder who rushed in to rescue the trapped bird.
Record Eagle writes that Chris Johnson and Ken Scott arrived at the scene without wasting any time. They tried to apprehend the eagle with a blanket while trying to film it at the same time but their efforts were not yielding any fruit.
The bird kept flopping around the ice, endangering himself even more. With several attempts, however, they were able to move the bird to the shore where it was easier for them to capture it.
Unfortunately, the eight-inch ice ball that had trapped the bird by the tails wasn't coming off. They decided to take the eagle to the rescue center to remove the ball of ice and nurse the bird to recovery. When they got to the center, they ran some warm water over the ice ball to melt it away. Once the ice melted, the bird was free from his agonizing tragedy.
It was relieving to see that his life had been saved even though the rescuers could not release him just yet. They needed to nurse his injuries for some days.
It took the bird three days to regain his ability to fly, and in another few days, he was ready to be released back to the wild where he belonged.
