Maggie Gyllenhaal Says She Has ‘Never Been As Close’ To Brother Jake Gyllenhaal As Now

Some sibling relationships evolve quietly over time. For Maggie Gyllenhaal and her younger brother Jake Gyllenhaal, that shift has come after decades spent building careers in the same industry.

Speaking on The New York Times podcast “The Interview,” Maggie recently opened up about how their relationship has changed as they have grown older. The actress and filmmaker explained that inviting Jake to appear in her 2026 film “The Bride!” was not just a professional decision. It also carried a deeper emotional weight for her.

The project marked the first time the siblings have worked together since their breakout roles as brother and sister in the 2001 cult classic “Donnie Darko.” That film introduced audiences to both actors and launched careers that have since taken them in very different directions.

Maggie admitted that for a long time, she felt the need to create distance between their careers.

“I have in the past, had to sort of be separate from my family, from my brother,” she said during the conversation.

She explained that carving out her own path felt necessary when they were both starting out.

“Like, cool, I’ve got my own thing going. I think I did have to do that. I mean, we both started so young,” Maggie said.

Still, when the time came to cast “The Bride!,” something shifted for her personally. Asking Jake to join the project felt like more than a casting choice.

“It was just a really honest, vulnerable, what’s underneath rage, reaching out,” she shared. “Just basically saying, I want to interact, and I know that this is a place where we can do it.”

For Maggie, extending that invitation came from a place of trust and respect.

“I’m not asking him to do something that he can’t do,” she said. “I’m making an offer, which is a generous thing to do.”

The film itself carries a special meaning for Maggie, who wrote and directed “The Bride!” But before inviting Jake to participate, she said she had carefully considered whether it was the right decision.

“I waited until I was absolutely sure that asking him to do this part… it’s a pretty small part, it’s just a cameo, really,” she explained to “The Interview” podcast. “I made sure, I really did some work and thinking to make sure it was the right thing to do, to ask him.”

Jake ultimately agreed to take on the role. In the film, he plays an actor named Ronnie Reed, appearing alongside a cast that includes Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. Maggie’s husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard, also appears in the project.

For longtime fans of the siblings, the collaboration felt like two sibling Hollywood heavyweights coming full circle. Both Maggie and Jake were raised in a family deeply connected to filmmaking. Their father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, built a career directing television and films beginning in the 1980s. Their mother, Naomi Foner, earned an Academy Award nomination in 1989 for the screenplay of “Running on Empty.”

The siblings began acting as teenagers in the 1990s before landing their breakthrough roles together in “Donnie Darko.”

Despite sharing work in the same industry and family roots, Maggie said their bond has only grown stronger in recent years. During the podcast conversation, host Lulu Garcia-Navarro asked whether the siblings had ever been estranged.

Maggie quickly clarified that that was not the case.

“No, no, we’ve never been estranged,” she said. “But we’ve never been as close as we are now.”

She added that their relationship has deepened steadily over time.

“We’re finally, maybe in the last five years, more and more and more, even each day, really interacting, which is hard for people to do.”
