Singer Madonna is known for her reign as a pop star with hits such as "Like a Virgin," "Material Girl," "Papa Don't Preach," and many others. Referred to as the "Queen of Pop," her music and style set trends that have influenced popular culture for decades after her prime. Now in her 60s, Madonna has not only a rich and fruitful discography, but she also has a large family, consisting of both biological and adopted children, making for a unique group of six kids in total.
As the world has watched these kids grow up, it's become clear that all of Madonna's children have her confidence, sense of style and fashionable flair. Namely, Madonna's 16-year-old son David Banda, who certainly has his mother's love of dressing up and stunning crowds with his eye-catching outfits.
In a 2021 video posted to Madonna's Instagram, Banda is seen strutting around the house in a silk dress and rectangular black sunglasses. The sleek outfit not only shows off his slim figure but also his ability to command the room and capture the camera's attention. The runway walk he flaunts is undoubtedly a testament to his modeling skills, as well as unapologetic confidence.
Banda was adopted as a 13-month-old baby from Malawi, Africa in 2006. He was born in Lipunga, a village that's located in Western Malawi. His biological father, Yohane, felt that he needed to give Banda up to an orphanage as he didn't think he could take care of the boy on his own. This led to Madonna adopting young David.

In a 2017 interview with People, Madonna opened up on the difficulties of adopting Banda as well as her three younger children and the criticism she faced. In reference to Banda's adoption, she said: "Every newspaper said I kidnapped him. In my mind, I was thinking, 'Wait a minute. I'm trying to save somebody's life.' ... I did everything by the book. That was a real low point for me. I would cry myself to sleep."
The adoption came under the spotlight when Madonna and her ex-husband Guy Ritchie did not adhere to adoption rules, which, according to The Guardian, "require that foreigners be resident in the country for 18 months before adopting a child to ensure welfare officials have time to monitor their suitability."
Despite the variety of struggles adoption posed, Madonna has proved herself a devoted parent. Banda and Madonna in particular seem to share a special bond. The family even relocated to Lisbon, Portugal at one point to allow Banda to pursue a budding football career. The young athlete, who was only 13 at the time, had been accepted into the prestigious Benfica youth team.
In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Madonna spoke about their close connection. She said: "What he has more than anything is focus and determination. I'm pretty sure he got that from me." She continued, speaking to the similarities she sees between herself and her son. "He's the one I have the most in common with. I feel like he gets me; he has more of my DNA than any of my children so far. Let's see what happens."

In September 2021, in honor of Banda's 16th birthday, Madonna marked the special occasion as any mother would by posting a series of photos on Instagram of her baby boy over the years. The post included photos of the two together in Malawi with infant Banda balanced on Madonna's hip as well as more recent snaps of the two posing together and clowning around. In the caption, she gushed: "I cannot believe you have grown into This Young Man! This Artist. This Athlete. This Articulate and Charismatic Human. Who knew when I met you at Home of Hope Orphanage in Malawi, drinking coke out of a baby bottle and wearing no diaper that you would become this force of nature?”
Then in May 2022, Madonna posted a series of photos of her son with the caption, "family fight night." The two were attending the WBA Lightweight Championships in New York. For the occasion, Banda wore a red Adidas x Gucci dress while his mother wore a matching black Adidas ensemble.
During an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," Madonna commented on her son's fashion sense, as she said, "he wears my clothes and looks better in them." Jimmy Fallon agreed about the young man's many talents, as he said: "He's got something. He's got 'it'." Sweetly, Madonna corrected the host, saying "Something? He's got everything."
It has been lovely to see this talented young man grow and explore his interests. Who knows where he'll go next, but surely he'll always have the support of his loving mother.
