Madonna Once Proposed Marriage To Vanilla Ice But He Said No: ‘This Is Too Fast!’

Vanilla Ice reveals he received a marriage proposal from Madonna in the 1990s when he was a hot rising star in his ’20s and she was an established pop culture icon in her ’30s. But the rapper turned down Madonna, whom he dated for eight months, because he was not ready for marriage at such a young age.
Known as Robert Van Winkle in real life, Vanilla Ice became a breakout star after the release of his rap hit, “Ice Ice Baby” in 1990. He wrote the music as a 16-year-old kid living in South Florida, using hook samples from “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie, who were later credited for the inspiration. The hip-hop single was part of the album “To The Extreme,” which became the fastest-selling rap album for that period.
Before he became known as a rapper, Vanilla Ice was also a DJ, breakdancer and grand champion motocross racer. He was supposed to turn professional as a racer but was more drawn to dancing and performing. He got his start on the stage by opening for the shows of Sir Mix-a-Lot, Public Enemy, and MC Hammer in the late 1980s.
Due to the success of “Ice Ice Baby,” Vanilla Ice landed a starring role in the romantic movie “Cool as Ice” opposite Kristin Minter and had a cameo in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” in 1991.
However, after touring non-stop to promote his music, Vanilla Ice decided to lay low on making music and performing in 1993. This also came after Madonna released an erotic table book titled “Sex” that talked of her brief relationship with the rap star.

In an exclusive interview on the “Just Jenny with Jenny Hutt” podcast, which was uploaded on YouTube on Jan. 31, 2023, Vanilla Ice confirmed that Madonna proposed to him during their whirlwind romance in 1991. He met her during his tour in New York City and one of the recording company bigwigs arranged their date.
Vanilla Ice said that things got “a little dirty” after he had dinner with the pop superstar and then they became an item. Eventually, Madonna popped the question, but he rejected her.
“I mean things were going so crazy and fast man,” Vanilla Ice said of why he said no. “This is too fast. I’m just getting started here, and I’m way too young for this.”
But the rapper decided to break up with Madonna after she published about their relationship without his consent on “Sex.” He said he had no idea she was writing the book and even thought of suing Madonna. In the end, Vanilla Ice decided to just let the controversy die down, even as Madonna made the breakup harder.
Despite this, Vanilla Ice has no ill feelings for his ex and even calls Madonna “a legend.” The rapper added that he does not believe every bad story written about the iconic star.
In 1997, Vanilla Ice married Laura Giaratta and became a dad to daughters Dusti Rain, born in 1998, and KeeLee Breeze, born in 2000. The marriage, however, ended in divorce in 2016. In 2018, the rapper became a dad for the third time after welcoming another baby girl but has kept the details of the baby’s mother private.
These days, Vanilla Ice does lighting fixtures in his Florida hometown.
