Madonna, 64, Still Experiences Motherhood Struggles But Is ‘Happiest’ After Witnessing Her Children’s Growth

Pop icon Madonna has defied the odds and broken boundaries throughout her multi-decade-long career. She is a singer, performer and pop culture icon. Madonna has given us plenty of hits, defining the course of pop music and ultimately giving her the moniker the "Queen of Pop."

Madonna was born on Aug. 16, 1958, making her 64 years old today. Originally from Michigan, the aspiring star moved to New York City in the late 1970s to pursue a career in dance before finally finding success as a solo singer. She has since released a plethora of No. 1 hits, including "Papa Don’t Preach," "Like a Prayer" and "Vogue."

However, great music and iconic fashionable looks are not the only cultural contributions that the star has given the world. Madonna is also a mother to six children, with a mix of both biological and adopted children, resulting in a diverse and talented family. 

As the world has watched these kids grow up, it's become clear that all of Madonna's children have her confidence, sense of style, and fashionable flair. Her children include Lourdes "Lola" Maria Ciccone Leon, Rocco Ritchie, David Banda Mwale Ciccone, Chifundo Mercy James, and twins Stella and Estere Ciccone. 

In January 2023, Madonna announced that she would be embarking on an ambitious “The Celebration” World Tour, which marks her 40th anniversary in the music industry. In celebration, she graced the cover of Vanity Fair, where she talked about the struggles of parenthood and the importance of nurturing her children’s talents.

Madonna, 64, has not only a rich and fruitful discography but also a large family of six kids. She gave birth to her eldest, Lola, now 26, with her then-partner, Cuban actor Carlos Leon. Lola has kept a pretty low profile over the years, although she has shared moments of her life on her Instagram. On the other hand, Rocco was her only child with director Guy Ritchie, who she divorced in 2008, citing irreconcilable differences. 

After Rocco, Madonna decided to adopt her next child – which ultimately brought plenty of challenges along the way. 

According to an interview with People Magazine, she reached a low point in her life when she was accused of kidnapping her son David when she tried to adopt him in 2008, to the point that she was crying in her sleep after facing a heap of backlash. 

Her second daughter and fourth child, Mercy James, was adopted in 2007. Mercy's adoption was also a breakthrough for the people of Malawi as Madonna opened the first intensive care hospital two years after. Ten years after, Madonna adopted the twins Stella and Estere.

Madonna is very proud of her diverse and incredible family. During special occasions, she always makes it a point to post her children on her own social media. 

On Thanksgiving 2022, Madonna posted a carousel of photos of her children, showing the world what she was thankful for – her six incredibly artistic and healthy children. 

Weeks after, Madonna greeted her millions of followers across the globe with a special Christmas photo of her along with her children. Lola and Rocco, however, were not present. 

But despite being a mother for almost 30 years, Madonna, like any mother out there, still experiences difficulties, especially since she is the sole provider for most of them.

As she announced her upcoming world tour in January 2023, Madonna also graced the cover of Vanity Fair and shared her realizations as a mom ahead of her highly-anticipated world tour. 

“Today, I am still struggling to understand how to be a mother and do my job,” the singer confessed. “Because, whoever you are, having children and raising them is a work of art. And no one gives you a manual. You have to learn from mistakes. It is a profession that requires a lot of time. And it is exhausting because there is never rest.”

Madonna is set to conquer the world with her 65-date concert in North America and in Europe. Starting from July 2023 to December 2023, the “Like A Virgin” singer will be on the road, preparing and rehearsing for her concerts. 

Elsewhere in the interview, the artistic Madonna also emphasized that it made her “the happiest” as a mother after seeing that each of her six children has found their creativity at their own pace. 

"I have never encouraged my daughter Lola to make music or my son Rocco to paint. But I've always exposed them to art, to music. I'm happy with how they are today. And I'm proud of their work,” she furthered. 

Madonna further celebrates watching them discover the things they love as they grow up. 

"And to see them happy, to witness their growth, to watch them evolve and then to find the things they love. Most of my happiness comes from my children. And much more from the inspiration that some artists give me,” Madonna revealed.
