Larry Junstrom, the original bassist and a founder of the rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd, has passed away at the age of 70. His current band 38 Special updated their social media page to inform their fans of Junstrom’s death.

38 Special wrote to their Facebook page:

"The Big Man on the Big Bass has left us. He rocked arenas all over the world and succeeded in living his dream. He was truly one of a kind, a congenial traveling companion and a great friend to all with a humorous slant on life that always kept our spirits high – a kind man with a big heart for everyone who crossed his path.”

Junstrom along with classmates Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and Bob Burns started the band Lynyrd Skynyrd in high school in 1964 according to Ultimate Classic Rock. However, Junstrom left the band in 1971 and joined 38 Special.

Junstrom told Swampland about his first gig with 38 Special, saying:

“My first show with .38 was the Super Bowl of Rock and it is to this day one of the biggest shows we have ever done. It was at Soldier field in Chicago and there were about 100,000 people there. I will never forget it.”

38 Special continued on their Facebook saying:

“There will never be another like him. We are sending our devoted love, strength, and comfort to his wife Thania and Larry’s family. We will miss our friend and partner.”
