She quickly emerged into the world of performing at a young age and continued to flourish as she grew older. After participating in a few beauty pageants, the successful woman gained nationwide attention, making it even easier for her to make her way into the acting industry. After making waves in both the music scene and acting scene, Carter was viewed as an idol to many.

Despite being in the public eye for such a long time, Carter managed to not have any major scandals, aside from an incident that involved her late husband, Robert A. Altman. This helped her carry on the legacy of Wonder Woman well past her days on the 1970s television series. With a strong sense of compassion and the support for female empowerment, Carter has been a role model for many people all around the world, especially women of all ages.

Today, Carter is 69 years old and is still absolutely beautiful. Her career has continued to thrive, and she even still works on projects that involve superhero concepts. Carter has also kept up her music career with the release of more albums, although she is not touring at the moment. Carter has continued to inspire others over the past 50 years because of her beauty both inside and out.

Carter’s Early Life

Carter was born on July 24, 1951, in Phoenix, Arizona. She grew up in an average household with her parents, brother Vincent and sister Pamela. At the young age of 5, Carter was already interested in performing for others and made her public television debut on “Lew King’s Talent Show.” She continued to show off her talents throughout her childhood and teenage years and performed in a band called Just Us during her high school days. Striving to succeed, Carter joined two of her cousins in another band called The Relatives, which also included actor Gary Burghoff as the band’s drummer.

When it was time to leave high school, Carter enrolled at Arizona State University, but her days at the college didn’t last long. She dropped out to pursue a music career and sang on tour with The Garfin Gathering. Performing in casino lounges around the state of Nevada in Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Reno, and Las Vegas, Carter realized that not many people knew of them, and her career was not progressing the way she had desired. This led the young woman to leave the band and return to Arizona in 1972 to pursue a career in acting.

In 1972, Carter represented Arizona in the Miss World USA pageant and gained national attention across the United States after she won. She went on to participate in Miss World 1972, representing the United States and reached the overall top 15 of the competition. Also during this time, Carter began taking acting classes at several acting schools in New York.

Lucky for her, one of her acting partners during this time turned out to be future CBS president Les Moonves. This would later play a vital role in the development of Carter’s career in the entertainment industry. In 1974, Carter appeared in an episode of “Nakia,” and began making more appearances on other television shows shortly after. It wasn’t long before the rising actress made her breakthrough when she landed the role of a lifetime in the TV series “Wonder Woman.”

The series was based on the DC Comics comic books about a fictional female superhero who had the secret identity of a woman named Diana Prince. Wonder Woman is one of the founding members of the Justice League, a group of superheroes within the DC Comics universe that included other heroes such as Batman, Green Lantern, and Aquaman. The comic books about Wonder Woman were extremely popular, leading to the development of a TV series about the iconic superhero.

Obtaining a role on the television show “Wonder Woman” helped Carter’s career exponentially as her performance resonated well with fans and critics alike. The up-and-coming actress was likeable and earnest, which helped people feel connected to her and enjoy watching her portrayal of the superhero. The show originally aired on ABC but switched networks and moved to CBS. It spanned a total of three seasons over a four-year run.

Carter’s performance in the TV series was absolutely iconic as she perfectly captured the goodness of the character and also had a great costume and theme song to further enhance the overall representation of Diana Prince and Wonder Woman.

Becoming Wonder Woman

The costume she wore in the television series perfectly mirrored the one in the comic books. The Wonder Woman attire featured a bodysuit that was red on the top with gold detailing and blue on the bottom with white stars. It was fitted to show off Carter’s incredible physique with a gold belt that was attached to the Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth.

While fans and critics appreciated Carter’s performance in “Wonder Woman,” the company behind the popular show also enjoyed how she captured one of their notorious superheroes. DC Comics named Carter as one of the honorees in the company’s 50th-anniversary production “Fifty Who Made DC Great” in 1985 because of her work in the television series.

The company profited greatly from the actress and the TV show and released a 13-inch full-figure statue of Carter as the iconic hero in 2007 and again in 2010. DC Direct also sold smaller sculptures of Carter as Wonder Woman in 2010 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of DC Comics.

While she was still working on “Wonder Woman,” Carter began to receive recognition from others and was in popular demand for promotional work. She signed a modeling contract with Maybelline cosmetics in 1977 and also appeared in a Diet 7Up commercial in 1979. Although Carter was known for her incredible acting abilities, there was no denying how unbelievably beautiful she was. In fact, the International Academy of Beauty and the British Press Organization both voted the actress as The Most Beautiful Woman in the world in 1978.

Returning To The Music Scene

Acting wasn’t the only talent Carter showcased to a wide audience, as she took another shot at a music career during the 1970s. In 1978, she recorded the album “Portrait,” which featured eight songs, three of which were co-written by Carter. The album also included covers of popular songs like “She’s Always a Woman,” originally by Billy Joel, and “Just One Look” by Doris Troy. Some of Carter’s songs were even featured in an episode of “Wonder Woman” where her character performed them.

Even though people liked Carter’s singing voice, her music didn’t always mesh well with others, as the songs weren’t very impressive. This resulted in Carter waiting more than 30 years to release her follow-up album, “At Last,” in June 2009. This time around, Carter took a backseat in the songwriting department for the 12 tracks featured on the album. The album went on to peak at No. 6 on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart in 2009.

Carter released more albums, with “Crazy Little Things” coming out in June 2011 and “Red, Rock n’ Blues” coming out in 2018. The latter was a collaboration with her All-Star band and also featured the vocals of her own daughter, Jessica Altman. Jessica later released her own EP titled “No Rules” in early 2020.

After “Wonder Woman” ended, Carter continued to thrive in her career in many areas, including music, film, and television. She made a guest appearance as herself on “The Muppet Show” in 1980 and even had a variety of her own musical TV specials, like “Lynda Carter Special” in 1980 and “Body And Soul” in 1984. Carter also landed the starring role in “Rita Hayworth: The Love Goddess,” a biographical film about actress Rita Hayworth, in 1983.

Some of her work in television around this time included jobs on “Partners in Crime” in 1984 and a spot in the 1989 CBS TV movie “Mike Hammer: Murder Takes All,” where she starred opposite Edward Winter and Jim Carrey. Along with these jobs, Carter also returned to what she knew best: portraying an other-worldly character in superhero productions.

Being a superhero seemed to be a lasting part of Carter’s acting career, as she starred in a number of projects aside from “Wonder Woman,” where she portrayed these exemplar characters. For instance, Carter was cast as Principal Powers in the Disney film “Sky High,” where she plays the principal of a school for superheroes. She also made a guest appearance in an episode of “Smallville,” a show based on Superman, another hero in the DC Comics saga.

However, being a superhero was not the only role Carter was capable of handling, as she starred in movies like “The Creature of the Sunny Side Up Trailer Park” in 2004 and a 2005 remake of “The Dukes of Hazzard.” The actress even migrated to theater and performed in a production of “Chicago” in London, England, from September to November 2005. In May 2007, the talented actress and singer began touring across the United States with her one-woman musical cabaret show called “An Intimate Evening with Lynda Carter.”

Carter has had her fair share of ups and downs when it comes to romance. She was married to her former talent agent, Ron Samuels, from 1977 until 1982. The actress later married lawyer and video game executive Robert A. Altman on Jan. 29, 1984.

Reflecting On Her Life In The Spotlight

The couple’s love was so strong that Carter even left the spotlight for a short bit of time to join her husband where he worked in Washington DC. Together, they had two children, James Altman, who was born in January 1988, and Jessica Carter Altman, who was born in October 1990. The family lived in a home they built in 1987 in Potomac, Maryland.

The couple faced some hardships when Altman was involved in a scandal surrounding the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, leading to the lawyer being acquitted. Recently Carter has been struggling with the loss of her husband, as he died in a hospital in Baltimore on Feb. 3, 2021, due to complications from a medical procedure.

In 2019, the successful woman reflected on her long-lasting career during an appearance on “Pickler and Ben,” a talk show featuring country singer Kellie Pickler and media personality Ben Aaron. “I moved to LA and was kind of a starving young actor, and then I got ‘Wonder Woman’ when I was down to my last $25,” Carter said. She explained a little more about the audition process. “They did sort of a national search,” Carter explained. “I didn’t have to do the cold reading, but I did test for it and I got the role.”

The success of “Wonder Woman” launched Carter into stardom and also made her an idol to many people, especially women all over the world. “I really did feel that it was an opportunity for me to have an impact,” she said. “I always played Diana, I never played Wonder Woman. The audience knew the secret of Wonder Woman, so I played Diana all the time.”

During the interview, Carter revealed that she is friends with actress Gal Gadot who played Wonder Woman in the 2017 movie version of “Wonder Woman.” The younger actress also portrayed the superhero in a variety of follow-up movies and other projects, such as “Justice League” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” which also co-starred Carter. Carter is also friends with Patty Jenkins, the woman who directed the newer movies about the iconic female superhero.

“I think they did a wonderful job, more power to them,” Carter said. “It just brings more people into sort of that idea that we can be anything and do anything and accomplish, no matter what size and shape and ethnicity and hair color… and whatever age we are at.”

Some of Carter’s recent work includes a recurring role on The CW’s “Supergirl,” where she plays President Olivia Marsdin. Her co-star, Melissa Benoist, plays the role of Supergirl. She talked about how much she enjoyed working on the show during her interview on “Pickler and Ben.” “Now this is something that I love,” Carter said. “It’s sort of like you get to play the president without having all the responsibilities.”

Over the course of her long-lasting career, Carter seems to have done it all. She portrayed one of the most iconic superheroes to date and continues to be recognized for her accomplishments as Wonder Woman. The multi-talented woman also made her presence known in the modeling industry as well as the music industry. As an icon for female empowerment, she has continued to pave the path for women today. As Carter nears the age of 70, she is still just as stunningly beautiful and memorable as she ever was.
