Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz’s Daughter Reveals Truth Behind Her Father’s Alleged Infidelities

Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of the renowned Hollywood couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, shared candid comments about her parents in a rare interview with CBS “Sunday Morning”, which aired on June 15, 2025. Though many viewed the couple as Hollywood’s golden pair, Lucie revealed that things weren’t as perfect behind closed doors.

According to Closer Weekly, Ball and Desi eloped in 1940, just six months after meeting. They had two children – Lucie in 1951 and Desi Jr. in 1953 – but their relationship was far from smooth. By 1960, they separated. Lucie, only 9 at the time, still remembered the pain of that moment vividly.

In the interview, Lucie recalled a household filled with conflict.

“They were fighting all the time,” she said, describing her childhood environment as full of “anger and screaming.”

“Their divorce was horrible. And then there was the alcoholism. I had preferred those things had never been there,” she added.

In a 1991 PEOPLE cover story, Ball’s close friend Lillian Briggs Winograd recalled how shaken Ball was after seeing Desi for the last time before he died in 1986:

“She left that place and broke down and said, ‘That was the one love…’” Winograd said.

Ball passed away at age 77 in 1989, three years later. Lucie’s candid memories offered a rare glimpse into the private world of two of Hollywood’s most iconic stars.

In the revealing CBS “Sunday Morning” interview, Lucie, 73, reflected on the complicated dynamics between her parents, Ball and Arnaz. Addressing long-standing rumors about Desi’s infidelity, Lucie said:

“People say he had affairs. He never had an affair. He didn’t even know these dames’ names. They were hookers.”

CBS correspondent Mo Rocca then asked:

“They were transactional?”

Lucie confirmed:

“Yeah. He loved my mother, he loved his family. It was a very unique, weird problem to have. And I think that’s the reason she stayed with him so long, is that she understood it. I don’t think I could do what she did.”

“But somehow, at the time, with what they had, with what they needed from each other, they stuck it out as long as they could,” she went on.

Ball and Desi ended both their marriage and their iconic TV show, “I Love Lucy,” in 1960. At the time, Lucie was 8, and her brother Desi Jr. was just 7.

Lucie recalled the day they were told about the divorce:

“We were at their house in Palm Springs, and they said that, ‘We love each other, but being husband and wife part is broken, and we can’t live together anymore.’”

Her brother’s innocent response stuck with her.

“I remember that my brother said, ‘But if it’s broken, can’t you just fix it? Can’t you put stuff on it and fix it?’” Lucie recalled, adding, “And they said, ‘I don’t think so.’ The truth of it is, Mo, they were happier after they got divorced. The screaming and the arguing and all that stuff stopped.”

She also shared, “I was very protective of my dad… I felt like he was the one that got ousted.”

Writer Bob Weiskopf, who worked closely with the couple, told PEOPLE in 1991 how he recalled Desi’s attitude toward his rocky marriage to Ball:

“What the hell’s the matter? I love her. When I go out with women, they’re usually hookers. Those don’t count.”
