Lovable Pitbull Has Had Biggest Heartwarming Grin Since She Was Rescued From Life On The Streets

Whether it’s living on the hard streets of an urban city or lost in the rural mazes of the countryside, a life exclusively outside is anything but comfortable for a dog. The streets are often unforgiving in nature. Cars zip to and fro and risk running you over. Mean humans looking for a “good time” kick you and throw things at you which could cause terrible injury.

This was the life for one Pitbull named Shortcake, before she was taken in by a no-kill shelter called Fresno Bully Rescue, in Fresno, California. After that, her life turned around when she was adopted by Amy Matsushima. Now she can't stop grinning from happiness, and she's even a bonafide social media star with her own Instagram page!

There are indeed shelters that open their hearts and doors to such animals, animals who eagerly await their forever home. However, many of these no-kill animal shelters refuse to take in Pitbulls. People are afraid to adopt this breed due to the sensationalized media attention given to pitbull attacks and very little in the realm of coverage for when a pitbull helps someone or saves a life. Therefore, even rare shelters that provide refuge for Pitbulls from the streets frequently find themselves at maximum capacity.

The inevitable conclusion of these factors in the life of a street pitbull is anything but happy. Illnesses go untreated and parasites are able to ravage their intestinal tracts unchecked. Wild Pitbulls, seen as a nuisance at best and dangerous at worst, are often victims of killings and violence by frightened humans who band together to drive the “danger” away. Even other dogs, perhaps made ferocious by a need for food and being neglected love, might fight for what limited space there is outside of the prying eyes of the people around. This only further helps to perpetuate the stereotypes about the breed.

However, there is a ray of hope in the story of Shortcake for all Pitbulls out there in a shelter or otherwise in need of a loving home. In her situation, she had gotten very lucky. Originally found wandering aimlessly on the streets of Fresno, California, she was anything but a pretty sight. Shortcake was suffering from mange, a potentially life-changing problem with her fur, and her skin was in a dire condition. It was said that it was nearly rotting off, so unfortunate was her condition. She even was suffering from a painful hernia in her intestines.

Still, despite all of these health issues, this precious furbaby and her loving smile was rescued by humans who not only have an appreciation for animals but who also have a kind heart for helping the neediest of them. Shortcake was taken in by Fresno Bully Rescue, an organization dedicated to improving the lives and the image of pitbulls for everyone, everywhere. They were even able to find her a loving foster home, which she thanked everyone for with her signature smile.

Shortcake’s smile only grew and grew as her situation improved. Today, she has over 156,000 followers on Instagram and frequently gets more than 20,000 likes and shares from her pictures. Her new mom, Amy Matsushima, dresses Shortcake up in adorable outfits for a variety of photos that always highlight the pitbull’s infectious grin. Shortcake’s fans attribute their love of her to how she is always able to improve their outlook on their day. Amy said she found Shortcake online and wanted to adopt her immediately!

Shortcake has since recovered from her hernia and spends her time playing with her other foster siblings before taking a much needed nap. Apparently, Amy reports that Shortcake even grins while she sleeps! She also has plans to adopt another dog so that Shortcake has a full-time playmate while mommy goes off to work. Until then, Shortcake has plenty of internet friends and fans that wish the smiling pitbull all the best.
