Loretta Lynn is a legendary country music singer, songwriter and author who sold over 45 million records worldwide. She was born Loretta Webb on April 14, 1932, in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, one of eight children of a coal miner. Loretta’s childhood was marked by poverty and hard work, but she found solace in singing and writing songs. Her passing on Oct. 4, 2022, at the age of 90, was a profound loss to the country music world. Her music and legacy continue to inspire generations of artists while she remains an icon of American culture and a testament to the power of hard work, determination and perseverance.
At the age of 15, Loretta married Oliver Vanetta Lynn, better known as “Doolittle” or “Mooney.” The couple moved to Custer, Washington, where Loretta began performing at local clubs and writing her own songs. In 1960, her song “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” caught the attention of the record industry.
Over the next few years, Loretta’s star continued to rise, with hit songs such as “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man),” “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind),” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” She became known for her honest, straight-talking lyrics that reflected the lives of working-class women, and her voice, which combined country twang with a powerful belt.
Loretta’s success wasn’t limited to music, however. In 1976, she published her autobiography, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” which was later made into a successful film. They chronicled Loretta’s rise to fame, and struggles with poverty and domestic violence.
Despite rocketing to stardom, Loretta never forgot her responsibility as a mother. She had six children with Oliver, who passed in 1996, and they were her whole world. Now, that family has expanded with the arrival of another great-grandchild in March 2023.

Loretta’s first child, Betty Sue Lynn, was born in 1948 when the singer was just 16 years old. Betty Sue followed in her mother’s footsteps, pursuing a career in country music and becoming a talented songwriter before passing away in 2013 at the age of 64 due to complications from emphysema.
Loretta’s second child, Jack Benny Lynn, was born in 1949. Jack Benny preferred the great outdoors to music and kept an eye on the family ranch instead. He drowned in 1984 at the age of 34 while trying to cross a river on horseback.
Clara “Cissie” Marie Lynn was born in 1952. Like her siblings, Cissie pursued a career in music and recorded several albums, including one with her husband called “The Daughter of the Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
Ernest Ray Lynn, Lynn’s fourth child, was born in 1954. He too played in his mother’s band and often joined her while on tour.
Loretta’s last two kids were twin daughters Peggy Jean – named after her sister Peggy Sue – and Patsy Eileen – named after her good friend and fellow artist Patsy Cline. Loretta welcomed the pair on Aug. 6, 1964. In the 1990s, the twins formed a duo called The Lynns and recorded one album from which two singles charted.
In 2016, Loretta shared insights into how she juggled motherhood and a top-notch career. She told People it was “rough” in the early days on the road.
“I was working clubs, and I was doing like three and four shows a night. And I hadn’t been in the business but two years before I got pregnant, and I had twins. I’d play shows right up until the babies was born and that guitar around my neck just about killed me. I don’t advise it to any mother,” she revealed.

In October 2022, one of Loretta’s grandchildren, Anthony Brutto, announced there would soon be another addition to the great Lynn family. Anthony is the son of Loretta’s youngest daughter Patsy. In an Instagram post, Anthony shared photos of him and his girlfriend, Emailey Rushing, showing off baby scan photos. “Halfway there!!! So excited to be 20 weeks in. February 27 cannot get here soon enough. @emaileyrushing and I are over the moon. Look at that little foot!!!” the excited papa wrote in the caption alongside some more photos of his partner flaunting her baby bump.
Anthony is proud to be part of the legacy Loretta left behind. In a birthday post on Apr. 14, 2022, he shared some sweet snaps of himself with his famous grandma, which he captioned:
“I am grateful for the amazing opportunities that I have had the chance to take and all the experiences that have come along the way because of her. She took a chance with me on running her Ranch and our family business. Everyday I work hard to make her proud and continue her legacy. I am proud to call you Memaw and will always strive to be the best I can be because of her.”
Finally, the big day came. On March 6, 2023. Anthony and Rushing welcomed their child and his cousin, Tayla Lynn, shared some sweet snaps of the newborn, named Owyn Rae Brutto. “Welcome this new little addition to our big ole wild family!!!!” Tayla captioned the post in true country style.
While baby Owyn will sadly never know his famous great-grandmother, one of the most influential country music stars of all time, Loretta’s legacy will live on in her works and the love and values she’s imparted to the family members around him.
