The Hunter’s Moon will be close to the horizon and the moment tricks your brain into seeing the moon as larger than it is. Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 13th at 5:08 p.m. when the yearly phenomenon will occur for 2019. While it might seem early in the day, the appearance of the moon around sunset also contributes to its large appearance.

The Hunter’s Moon is so-called because Native American hunters could see the animals that came out to gather food, as well as those animals that preyed on them. It directly follows the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon closest to the first day of autumn. The Harvest Moon is named for the right time for farmers to harvest their summer crops according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

If you miss this month’s Hunter’s Moon you can catch the next full moon in November on the 12th for the Full Beaver Moon. The Old Farmer’s Almanac keeps tabs on the moon phases and you can track when these special occurrences happen.
