A woman, named Kelly Mandrell, adopted a kitten before the age of social media. The kitten got loose one day and ran away. Kelly looked everywhere, but she could not find her cat. Over the years, she moved on with her life.

Thankfully, this kitten had a microchip implanted by the vet. The forward-thinking owner made a wise choice in this regard. Pets with a microchip are more likely to be reunited with their owners and spared the euthanasia at a high-kill shelter if they have a microchip.

Recently, a 13 year old cat was rescued from a high-kill shelter. The adoptive pet parent took the cat to a vet. There, they found out that the cat had a microchip. It is unknown if the shelter had checked the cat for a microchip.

The adoptive cat mom was shocked to find out that the cat had a chip and had been reported as lost 13 years ago. She got the contact information and went to work trying to find the original owner of the cat. This was not an easy task. The name of the cat listed on the microchip was different from the name that the cat had at the shelter. The last name of the owner turned out to be her maiden name. The original owner of the cat had gone through a lot of life changes in the past 13 years. She had moved many times, gotten married, changed her name, changed her email and phone numbers, had two kids and adopted new pets.

The adoptive cat parent worked hard in order to find the cat's original owner. She put social media to use. Her diligence paid off. She found the cat's original owner, who lived 75 miles away. She was able to reunite the cat and its original owner. The original owner was thrilled to take it home.
