Some families just can't bear to leave their dog at home when they travel. The thought of having their precious pup locked in a crate or stuck with nothing to do just doesn't work. One family decided to bring their dog on the road with them and experienced a shocking result.

The Mathias family from Grandview, Texas, was on a road trip. Taking your dog with you when you travel comes with its own complications. You definitely can't leave your dog in the car when it's hot. But some places won't let you bring your four-legged friend in with you.

The Mathias family stopped to eat and tied their golden retriever to a tree. They made sure their doggy was in the shade and had some water. But when they came back outside, they discovered that Lucy, their beloved pet, was missing.

Surveillance footage showed that Lucy was taken away by someone driving a pickup truck. The Mathias family decided to contact their local news channel, KHOU 11, for help.

Matt Dougherty is a reporter for KHOU 11. He took it upon himself to see that Lucy was returned safely to her rightful owners. He used the license plate number to find the woman who took Lucy. Dougherty went to that property and saw that there were many dogs there.

He asked the property owners some questions about the missing pup and a little boy appeared with Lucy. The boy explained that they thought the dog was abandoned.

Dougherty took Lucy in his car and dialed the Mathias family. He showed them their dog on video chat to let them know Lucy was safe.

The Mathias family was understandably over the moon to see their beloved Lucy again. They will never leave their dog alone again when they travel.
