Earlier this month, a family from Mitcham, England intervened in a kidnapping attempt. Kadian Nelson, 26, was charged with rape and kidnap on November 5th.

Disturbing footage showing an 'attempted child abduction' in Mitcham, England circulated the Internet earlier this month. According to Wimbledon Times, Kadian Nelson, 26, has been charged with rape and kidnap for attempting to abduct a schoolgirl in the North Place area of Mitcham, on November 3rd, 2020.

In the video, a woman was seen confronting a man who was filmed walking with a young girl inside an alleyway. The woman followed the two until Kadian fled.

Christine, who is a key witness in the incident, told Wimbledon Times about how she, along with her three daughters, Zian, 11, Ashanti, 20, and Norrisa, 24, helped to save the victim. The mom-of-three said: "Zian was on the way to school when she noticed a guy with his hands over a girl's mouth. She called home and said, 'I think I just saw a girl get kidnapped by a guy'.”

That was when Christine told Zian to keep walking onto the main road and that she would go outside the gate. "As I went out to the gate, I could see somebody coming towards our road very fast,” Christine added. "As he got closer I realized it was the young girl with the guy, so I called out, 'Hello are you ok?”

“But, I knew she wasn't ok, as by then, I could see he had a yellow glove over her mouth,” Christine said.

Christine then called her daughter Ashanti and together they proceeded to follow the man and the girl. Christine and Ashanti split up to go after the man and this was where the 20-year-old started to record the video. In the video, Ashanti is heard saying, “Let her go! What are you doing with her?” She is also heard repeatedly questioning Kadian, who had his arms around the schoolgirl as they walked away from Ashanti. Christine’s oldest daughter Norissa posted the video on social media.

Wimbledon Times said that the perpetrator fled towards Colliers Wood when the police arrived.

"I was just relieved to see that we had managed to get her off him, even though we didn't know exactly what had happened," said Christine. "I feel good that she is safe, but I feel sick to know that a little girl was on her way to school and had to experience that.”

“Zian was just three minutes behind her, It could have been my child," she added. Christine praised Zian for being observant and alerting her mother of the situation. "Had Zian not made that phone call and carried on walking and got on her bus, we don't know what would've been,” said the proud mom.

Christine wants to get the point across that children should voice out when they see something suspicious. She concluded: "I know sometimes people are scared, but Zian was scared too and she still found that little thing in her to say let me phone and tell them."

Detective Superintendent Owain Richards said that the police were aware of the video that circulated on social media and added: "I recognise that this is a shocking and distressing incident and emotions locally are running very high."

The police launched an appeal urging the suspect to turn himself in “immediately” for the safety of himself and the public. On November 5th, Kadian Nelson was charged with rape and kidnap.

Siobhain McDonagh, the Member of Parliament for Mitcham and Morden, took to Twitter to post this statement:

I’m pleased to report that a man has this morning been charged following the truly awful attack that occurred in Mitcham on Tuesday. All our thoughts remain with the young victim. My heart goes out to her. I know everyone in our community shares my gratitude for the courage and bravery of the witness and for the hard work of the police working on this case. If anyone would like to contact me regarding this, my email address is [email protected]

Ashanti expressed her gratitude to people who have been praising her, tweeting: "I wish I could thank you all individually, I’m not a hero, I'm just glad I had the courage to follow through.” She continued: “My little sister is the real hero here, she’s 11 years old and was able to notice that something was not right and called me straight away. Otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to save that little girl.”

"I only hope and pray that if it was one of my girls, that somebody would do the same thing,” said Christine.
