Lacey Grace was enjoying a typical Saturday afternoon at the pool with her four-year-old daughter Elianna. Her daughter was splashing around in her grandmother's pool with her friend like any normal kid would, when all of a sudden, a splash of water went down Elianna's throat. She instantly spat up the water, and there were no other noticeable symptoms. Elianna was fine for the rest of the day.

However, the following day she developed a fever.

Grace didn't think much of her illness. After one day of rest, Grace sent her to school on Wednesday as if it was just another typical school day. When Elianna was sent home from school on Wednesday after her fever came back, Grace knew she was no longer dealing with any normal fever. Grace recalled a story she read about a dad who lost his son because he wasn't immediately treated after swallowing pool water.

It was at this moment things took a turn for the absolute worst.

Grace rushed Eliana to an urgent care. She was hoping that the doctor would say it was just viral. Ten minutes into their visit, the doctor shared some unfortunate news. Elianna needed to be taken to the nearest emergency room right away. Her heart rate was higher than normal, and her oxygen levels were low. Eliana's skin was turning purple from a suspected chemical reaction. An X-ray of Eliana's body revealed inflammation and an infection in her chest from the pool chemicals. She had to be transported to a bigger hospital where she could be watched twenty-four seven.

Eliana had to rely on a machine to breathe for her because anytime the doctors took the tubes out her oxygen levels dropped. Elianna's fever continued despite consuming two helpings of antibiotics. Her heart rate eventually did revert to normal.

If you know parents who have kids that spend a lot of time at the pool, please consider sending them this article. Let parents know that they should take their kids to a doctor immediately if they swallow too much pool water. Grace was able to get Elianna to the hospital at the right time; you do not want to wait until it's too late.
