Five-year-old ice skater, Jessica Chu, performs at the Aliso Viejo Ice Skating Competition.

Ice skating has got to be one of the most difficult activities imaginable. For most people, simply trying to walk along on a snow and ice-covered sidewalk is a nerve-wracking experience. When someone is able to glide across the ice gracefully on ice skates, it is an all inspiring sight to behold. When it is done by a small child, it makes for an unforgettable experience indeed.

Five-year-old ice skating phenom Jessica Chu makes ice skating look as easy as walking. She moves along on the ice, performing as gracefully as adult skaters with decades more experience. At the Aliso Viejo Ice Skating Competition, Jessica was filmed as she took to the ice for her “Pre-Alpha” skating performance.

A “Pre-Alpha” ice skating routine is considered to be entry-level testing for beginning and/or very young ice skaters. They are required to perform a series of specific maneuvers including forward and backward swizzles, both one- and two-foot glides, and a backward wiggle.

Little Jessica performed each and every move perfectly, with a confident sparkle in her eye and a big beautiful smile on her face. She easily moved through each maneuver as if she had been born on the ice. As Jessica gets into the position to begin her routine, the song “Ice Cream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream” erupts from the speakers.

The audience has been silent ever since Jessica took her place at the center of the rink. When the music begins, she bursts into her routine and the crowd explodes in cheers and applause. Her first move, a two-foot glide, is executed perfectly, exactly in accordance with the strict rules set forth for the competition. Jessica's cotton candy-pink skating dress with an adorable bow on the back makes her look like a pretty doll come to life on the ice.

Jessica transitions smoothly into the next maneuver, the one-foot glides, performing them perfectly on both the left foot and the right foot. These moves require perfect coordination, balance, and focus, and little Jessica displays all three with ease. She performs each and every move without ever losing the adorable smile that lights up her face. Without missing a beat, she sails through the forward swizzles, stops stock-still, bounces into position, and easily performs her backward swizzles and finally, the backward wiggle.

Jessica performs each maneuver perfectly. Seeing such amazing precision and control of movement in one so young leaves no doubt in the minds of the spectators or the professional ice skaters present that this little lady has a dazzling future ahead of her if she chooses to pursue a career in professional ice skating.

Everyone was expecting Jessica’s routine to conclude after she performed the final required maneuver, the backward wiggle, but they were in for a surprise: Jessica skated back across the ice, raising a little leg behind her as she floated across the rink. She then spun around in a circle, cheerfully waving to the audience as her music came to an end and she left the ice.

The audience was thrilled and no one was surprised when the announcement was made that Jessica Chu had won first place! The applause and foot-stomping of the audience were deafening! Fortunately for everyone who couldn’t be present to witness it in person, little Jessica's performance was recorded and posted online for thousands of people to enjoy. And enjoy it they have!
