Lionel Richie Rushed To Hospital ICU After St. Louis Show

Lionel Richie was hospitalized in St. Louis after performing at The Muny on Aug. 29, 2026, according to multiple reputable outlets. ABC News reported that the 77-year-old singer checked himself into a hospital “out of an abundance of caution,” citing a source close to his tour. Rolling Stone separately reported that a tour source said Richie was “OK” following the hospitalization.

The reason for the hospital visit has not been publicly confirmed. The Los Angeles Times reported that a representative for Richie declined to disclose the cause of the hospitalization or his prognosis. Reports suggesting that he required intensive care or was being treated for dehydration originated with TMZ and have not been independently confirmed by Richie’s representatives.

Richie’s St. Louis appearance was a one-night-only event at The Muny in Forest Park, not a standard stop on his joint tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. The venue had promoted the concert as its annual summer finale. The concert began at 8 p.m. and was presented separately from The Muny’s regular Broadway season. The Muny’s standalone concert tradition returned in 2024 after a break of more than three decades, with John Legend and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra headlining that year and Diana Ross and Jon Batiste appearing in 2025.

Rolling Stone reported that videos from Richie’s performance appeared to show him in good form for much of the set. During the closing number, “All Night Long,” however, he asked his team to bring him a stool and finished the song seated.

The hospitalization drew added attention because Richie had experienced another health issue onstage earlier in 2026.

On June 24, 2026, Richie cut short the opening concert of his North American tour with Earth, Wind & Fire at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that he told the audience he was feeling dizzy and “strange” about 55 minutes into his performance. He performed “Dancing on the Ceiling” while seated before announcing an intermission, and the show did not resume.

During Richie’s set, fans noticed that he appeared to be struggling while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Concertgoers’ videos showed him sitting down more than once as he tried to continue. Richie addressed the crowd with humor, saying, “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down.”

Richie postponed scheduled concerts in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, after doctors advised him to “rest and return to full health,” according to reporting cited by ABC News and the Star Tribune. He returned to the stage in Pittsburgh on June 30, 2026.

In a July 4, 2026, Instagram message, Richie thanked supporters for their concern.

“Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. ❤️ I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you,” he wrote.

The St. Louis event came during a busy performance year for Richie, whose career spans more than five decades, first with the Commodores and then as a solo artist. The Recording Academy lists four Grammy wins among 33 nominations, including Album of the Year for “Can’t Slow Down” and Song of the Year for “We Are the World.” The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Richie as a performer in 2022.

No official diagnosis tied to the August 29 hospitalization has been released. The clearest confirmed information is that Richie sought hospital care after the St. Louis concert as a precaution and that a source close to his tour told Rolling Stone he was “OK.”
