Lion Shows Unconventional Compassion Towards Baby Antelope

In the famous poem “The Tyger,” William Blake contemplates how the divine hand could create such a fearsome animal like a tiger while also molding the innocent frame of the lamb.

A video from Kruger National Park in South Africa seemingly answers Blake’s query. In the footage, a couple records a young lion helping a baby antelope. The antelope, which appears to have just been born, is doted on by the lion. The video shows the benevolent king of the jungle bringing the baby antelope out of the brush. Sitting in the grass, the bigger animal gives the baby a short bath as it bleats in protest. The video ends with the young lion following his new friend into the brush.

Graeme Mitchley, the tourist who filmed the interaction between the lion and the antelope, and his wife were on edge during the entire encounter. They initially thought that the animal was a lioness carrying her cub.

Graeme is a frequent visitor of Kruger National Park but he had not seen very many animals at all on that trip as a drought had caused them to look elsewhere for water.

When Graeme and his wife realized that it was a young male lion carrying a baby antelope, the couple feared the worst. Graeme's wife was almost moved to tears when she heard the young antelope crying out.

They theorized that the mother antelope was probably nearby, grazing not too far from her baby. All the times Graeme has visited Kruger National Park, he has never seen a sight as interesting as a lion taking care of an antelope.

Kruger National Park is one of the finest wildlife preserves in the world. Designated as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Kruger National Park is home to hundreds of different species of animals, including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and leopards.
