Lifeguards Follow Missing Dog’s Tag Into Open Ocean & Start To Lose Hope Until They Spot The Unbelievable

A quiet Sunday outing in San Diego turned into a frantic search for one couple and a heart-stopping rescue effort that stretched from the shoreline to the open water. Alexis and Brandon had planned to visit friends and family for a relaxing afternoon, but the day took an unexpected turn when their dog, a black Labrador retriever mix named Sadie, bolted out the front door of the home where they were staying and vanished.
Sadie, full of energy and curiosity, disappeared before they could stop her. Thankfully, the couple had placed a GPS tag on her collar, giving them a lifeline as they tried to track her across the city, a post from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department revealed. The signal led them to Ocean Beach, more than two miles away, where weekend crowds and the sound of crashing waves made the search even more tense.
Just as Alexis and Brandon were closing in on her location, a surfer reported seeing a dog swept from the jetty into the rip current. Suddenly, what had been a desperate search on land turned into something far more urgent. San Diego lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge were dispatched, along with support from the U.S. Coast Guard, to begin scanning the water.
As the hours passed, hope wavered. Rip currents along the California coast can be strong even for seasoned swimmers, and all anyone could do was trust that Sadie, a Labrador known for strength and stamina in the water, was still fighting. The couple waited anxiously on shore while rescue teams pushed farther into the surf, determined not to give up.

Lifeguards Smerdon and Alldredge began their search near Mission Beach, launching from their station and widening their sweep as the minutes stretched into an hour.
“We were here at Mission Beach, stationed here, and then we launched this ski here to help with the search party,” Smerdon explained in the video.
The weight of the moment was starting to settle in.
“We searched for an hour,” Alldredge added. “At that point, I kind of just said, ‘Please let us find this dog.’”
Even so, the lifeguards remained optimistic. Smerdon said that black labs are “fighters” and “water dogs,” giving him hope that Sadie might still be holding on. Eventually, the official search was called off as they drifted nearly three-quarters of a mile from shore. But just when the crew thought they had exhausted every possibility, Jack spotted something in the water.
“We got closer and closer, and then we realized it was her,” he said.
Sadie was tired but alive. Smerdon recalled that she was “super happy to see us,” relief washing over everyone involved.
Back on shore, Alexis and Brandon were recording a thank-you message when the moment they had prayed for finally arrived.
“We literally were standing right there with the guy, and he got a call on the walkie-talkie saying that they found the dog,” Alexis shared. “And we kind of just held our breath.”
When the confirmation came through, she said she and Brandon “started crying right away.” Sadie was safe, the search was over, and their family was whole again – thanks to a determined dog, an unbreakable bond, and a rescue team that never stopped believing they would find her.
