Lesser Known Details Of Meghan Markle's Life

Prince Harry's wife, Meghan Markle, prefers to keep her personal life out of the tabloids. This is why there is not a lot known about the Duchess of Sussex. However, Meghan has been working in show business since she appeared as an uncredited extra in an episode of "Married With Children" in 1995, so we do know some interesting facts about her life outside of her marriage to Prince Harry. 

Her first professional acting role was in 2002 on the daytime television series "General Hospital." The actress would then go on to star on the show "Suits" for seven years before retiring from the film and television industry in 2017. Outside of her career, we know she enjoys speaking up for underrepresented communities and loves animals. Keep reading to find out more things you may not know about Meghan Markle. 

 

She Spoke Up About Sexism At Age 11

When she was still a preteen, young Meghan knew that a commercial that suggested only women can wash dishes was sexist. She wrote to the company, Proctor and Gamble, asking them to change the language of the advertisement. The company agreed and the commercial was amended three months later. 

 

Her First Name Isn't Actually Meghan

It is commonly known that Meghan was born Rachel Meghan Markle, and decided to go by her middle name when she became an actress. However, the star was referred to as Rachel for seven years when she played the role of Rachel Zane on "Suits." We think the name Meghan Markle is definitely more memorable. 

Growing Up on the 'Married With Children' Set

Meghan told Esquire, "My dad was a lighting director and director of photography for 'Married with Children.' Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of (the show), which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up." She shared that there were instances when her father would ask her to leave during some inappropriate scenes. "There were a lot of times my dad would say, 'Meg, why don't you go and help with the craft services room over there? This is just a little off-color for your 11-year-old eyes.'"

She Was a Briefcase Girl on 'Deal or No Deal'

The beautiful actress had to work some interesting on-camera jobs before landing her role on "Suits." One of these was working on the game show "Deal or No Deal.Meghan said, "I would put that in the category of things I was doing while I was auditioning to try to make ends meet. Definitely working on 'Deal or No Deal' was a learning experience, and it helped me to understand what I would rather be doing."

Meghan Is Older Than Her Husband

The Duchess of Sussex turned 40 on August 4, 2021, while Prince Harry will turn 37 in September of the same year.

The Duchess Has Been Divorced

Meghan was previously married to Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013. The former couple dated for six years prior to their two-year marriage. In the past, a royal marrying a divorcee has been a pretty big scandal.

Dedication to Underrepresented Communities

Like most royals, Meghan has done her fair share of charity work. One thing that sets her apart is her personal connection to speaking up for communities that are underrepresented. She wrote an essay in 2015 on being biracial and the challenges that biracial families still face in the world today.

Yoga Practioner

The Duchess of Sussex's mother has worked as a yoga teacher for years and taught the practice to her daughter at a young age. Meghan still enjoys the exercise today and works it into her daily routine.

She Had A Lifestyle Blog 

Meghan launched a website before working on "Suits" called The Tig. She said to Good Housekeeping in 2016, "I see The Tig as a conversation between girlfriends. I love connecting with the fan base and sharing my experiences. There's so much snarky stuff on the Internet these days, so I've tried to create a space that's really positive and hopefully inspires you to do something that's uplifting and empowering."

Shares DNA with Shakespeare

Despite being one of the few Americans to marry into the British royal family, the former actress has some pretty interesting connections of her own. According to research conducted by MyHeritage.com, Meghan shares DNA with William Shakespeare and former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Double Majored at Northwestern University

Meghan told Marie Claire that she always had an interest in both theater and politics. "I knew I wanted to do acting, but I hated the idea of being this cliché—a girl from L.A. who decides to be an actress. I wanted more than that, and I had always loved politics, so I ended up changing my major completely and double-majoring in theater and international relations," said Markle.
