Lesbian Couple With 37-Year Age Gap Is Officially Married

Is age just a number? Julia Zelg and Eileen De Freest seem to think so. Despite a 37-year-age gap and a slew of hateful comments from internet trolls, Julia, a YouTuber in her mid-20s, married Eileen, a political correspondent in her 60s. Today, more than two years since they tied the knot, they both go by the same last name — De Freest.

The international (and intergenerational) couple met on Tinder, a popular dating app, in September 2018. Just three months after meeting, Julia, who is from Brazil, moved in with Eileen in London, where the American has been living for the past years. Given Julia’s extremely online profession, the YouTuber has updated her fans about the relationship since the beginning — and the comments have been mixed. However, Julia ignored the critics, proposing to Eileen in London, and in the summer of 2019, they were officially married after a ceremony at a five-star hotel in London. When Eileen flew to Julia’s home country to meet her family, the couple told the Mirror that they were supportive of their decision to get married. And the same goes for Eileen’s family, the couple says.

As Julia’s active YouTube channel shows, the pair is still together and seems to be doing fairly well. In a Sept. 2 video, Julia and Eileen responded to viewers’ questions about their personal life like: “Are you having problems in your marriage?” Although they admit they’ve had their ups and downs — especially because of the lockdown and stressful year — they say their relationship is strong and that they have worked through many of their problems.

As for the age gap, the couple has repeatedly told media outlets that the main drawback is that Julia will significantly outlive Eileen.

“The only thing I can say which is so significant about our age gap relationship is that I’ll be old when Julia is still quite young,” Eileen told the Daily Mail in 2019. “She’ll be moving into the meat of life and I’ll be getting quite a bit older, but that’s alright.”

“We can’t have this fantasy that we’re going to be forever and ever in the same decade of ageing, but love is love – and it’s here and that’s what we’re doing,” Eileen added.

While the pair seems realistic about the relationship, they do receive their fair share of hate comments.

“We don’t even feel the age gap,” Julia told PinkNews in 2018. “We’re totally natural with each other and it just feels so right.”

“The only problem is literally all the hate and the closed-minded people,” she explained.

Julia and Eileen also said that having such a large age gap isn’t always a problem for a relationship; in fact, it can be a bonus.

  “There is an element of it we enjoy but it’s the love we enjoy and the compatibility, and it’s probably enhanced by our age gap,” Eileen told PinkNews.

And beyond the hate comments and trolling, Julia and Eileen have also received an outpouring of support from fans who support their relationship.

“Not going to lie I was skeptical when you guys first got together. I was one of those people saying ‘maybe you guys should take it a bit slower... ‘ but my mind has completely changed overtime. My favorite couple! Everyone deserves to find someone  that’s as perfect for them as you guys are for each other,” Erin, a viewer, commented on one of Julia’s videos.
