Leonardo DiCaprio’s Earth Alliance foundation recently announced they have committed to donating $5 million to fight the destruction of the Amazon rainforest due to violent forest fires. DiCaprio along with philanthropists Laurene Jobs and Brian Sheth began Earth Alliance to protect the world’s ecosystems and wildlife. It looks like they are doing just that.

“The Earth Alliance pools the resources of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (founded by DiCaprio), Emerson Collective (founded by Jobs) and Global Wildlife Conservation (chaired by Sheth),” according to Variety.

This new organization will work to protect ecosystems and animal life, it will ensure initiatives to fight climate change are being met, and it will help support renewable energy sources. Not only that but the alliance plans on providing grants and educational opportunities while also funding documentary projects.

Earth Alliance announced their new commitment to the Amazonian fires explaining,

“the destruction of the Amazon rainforest is rapidly releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, destroying an ecosystem that absorbs millions of tons of carbon emissions every year and is one of the planet’s best defenses against the climate crisis.”

The organization will be partnering with an emergency Amazon fund committing to an initial donation of $5 million

“to focus critical resources on the key protections needed to maintain the ‘lungs of the planet.’ These funds will be distributed directly to local partners and the indigenous communities protecting the Amazon, the incredible diversity of wildlife that lives there, and the health of the planet overall.”
