Leonardo DiCaprio And Kate Winslet Have Been Inseparable For 25 Years With An Admirable Friendship

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are both internationally known film stars and icons. Both have won numerous awards for their acting: Golden Globes, Academy Awards and many more. Many fans remember them fondly for their roles in movies such as Finding Neverland or Little Children in Winslet's case, or Catch Me If You Can or Gangs of New York in Dicaprio's. They became friends when they first met when filming their blockbuster Hollywood film Titanic, which was the movie that brought them to international attention

More than twenty years later, these two are still going strong.

Winslet and Dicaprio met in 1996 when they were still young actors breaking through into the industry.

"I actually first met [DiCaprio] at [the] Cannes film festival. He was there and I was there, and we had already heard that both of us had auditioned for Titanic and met Jim Cameron. I was so excited because the possibility of working was there," Winslet told Magnus Sundholm.

"I met him in the hotel room with David Blaine and they were both doing magic tricks. I look back on that time and I think, my gosh it does seem so long ago. That's one of my greatest friendships and I'm so lucky to have him. He makes me laugh so much."

Hello! magazine meanwhile cited Dicaprio as stating that he felt a deep connection to Winslet because of their shared experience as growing up in the film industry:

"In a lot of ways, Kate and I have really grown up in this industry together; we've been a support mechanism for each other for such a long period of time. We've been there for each other and helped guide each other."

Because of their undeniable chemistry in Titanic, fans and the media alike have always speculated on whether the two were something of an item. Both actors have, however, categorically denied the rumors time and time again.

"I think the reason that friendship works is because there was never any romantic thing," Winslet told Marie Claire in 2014, as cited by eonline. She also mentioned that she feels fans are often disappointed by this missing romantic element of the friendship between the two stars. "It's so disappointing for people to hear that because, in the soap opera of the Kate and Leo story, we fell in love at first sight and had a million snogs, but we never did [in real life]."

However, even though romance was not part of the relationship the two formed with each other, they very much experienced a closeness and companionship that only good friends can have.

Winslet and Dicaprio played romantic interests again in the film Revolutionary Road (2008), which was directed by Winslet's husband at the time, Sam Mendes. The movie saw them in the roles of Frank and April Wheeler, a mid-50s couple facing personal problems and the breakdown of their marriage. Winslet went on to win a Golden Globe for her performance in the film.

"Leo, I'm so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I love you and how much I've loved you for 13 years, and your performance in this film is nothing short of spectacular. I love you with all my heart, I really do," Winslet said upon receiving the award.

In 2012, when Winslet secretly got married to Edward Abel Smith, her third husband and formerly known as Ned Rocknroll, DiCaprio reportedly walked her down the aisle. Only the two actor's closest friends and family were in attendance. And both stars have made it clear in interviews that they consider each other family. Speaking about the possibility of a relationship between her and DiCaprio, Winslet once stated: "Just the notion of that was insane it would have been absolutely like incest." She also added that she and DiCaprio would sometimes read gossip magazine stories about their supposed romantic relationship and laugh themselves silly about it.

In 2016, when the Oscar's were boycotted due to the lack of representation of Black people in Hollywood, Winslet was still there for her friend, claiming she felt like it was his year.

"I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo's year. [He] is my closest friend in the world and I just couldn't imagine not being there to support him," she told Vanity Fair.

Winslet went on to be right, as DiCaprio won his one and so far only Oscar in 2016 for his performance in the movie The Revenant. As DiCaprio had been nominated many times before and many fans had anxiously awaited and hoped that he might one day win an Oscar, this was a momentous piece of news. He won the award especially for the movie's fight scene in which his character is pitted against a bear. And while no actual bear was part of the scene - that was done with computerized help - the director and DiCaprio went to great lengths to make it as realistic as possible, including having DiCaprio being dragged around by metal wires with the same force an actual bear's punch would have.

In a world where Hollywood relationships and friendships seem to fall apart, it’s inspiring to see Kate and Leo stick together through thick and thin.
