Large Elk Herd Congregates Outside House In Small Town

In 2019, a massive herd of elk gathered outside a home in the small town Gearhart, Oregon, which has a population under 1,500. If the reaction in this video is any indication, elk might very well outnumber people in the town.

An anonymous woman recorded the video in the tiny town of Gearhart. Gearhart’s population is just under 1,500 and, if the lady’s video is any indication, elk might very well outnumber people in the town!

The video, which is a brief 23 seconds in length, shows dozens of elk clustered in the front yard of someone’s home. The majestic creatures quickly disperse, clip-clapping down the road as stunned homeowners peer through their windows in awe.

In an interview with reporters from ViralHog, the woman said that her father was taking pictures of a group of about 10 elk in their yard when he told her that more seemed to be gathering down the road.

Intrigued, the woman, her mother, and her sister walked a few blocks only to be astonished by the sight before them. The road was full of elk! Looking back on the encounter, the woman said that while Gearhart is home to a large herd of the elk, she had never seen the animals gather in such a massive group before.

Deciding to keep their distance, the woman and her family filmed the group of elk from about 10 yards away. Feeling safe behind a car, the woman told of how, once the elk came down the road, they gathered in the front yard of one of her neighbors, as seen in the video.

After spending a few moments in the yard, the elk quickly dispersed and resumed their trek down the road.

Looking back on the incident, the woman estimates that the elk stood 15 across and 10 deep.

Seeing such a larger cluster of the animals made the woman and her family feel threatened and intimidated, which is why they were happy when the animals left the area.

The state of Oregon has a population of around 125,000 elks. While mass gatherings like those seen in the woman’s video are incredibly rare, the state is having more and more issues with irregular contact between humans and elk.

By far the biggest issue driving these types of encounters is human encroachment in woodlands previously solely occupied by elks.
