In Ohio, a bride’s longtime landlord stepped into an unexpected role and gave her one of the most cherished memories of her life by walking her down the aisle on her wedding day.
For generations in Western wedding traditions, brides are typically accompanied by their fathers during the processional. The walk down the aisle is meant to symbolize both guidance and the beginning of a new chapter. For Cincinnati bride Shacole Fox, however, that tradition carried a heavy weight. Fox never knew her father, and although she believed she had accepted his absence, the approach of her wedding day stirred emotions she had not anticipated.
She explained to CBS News that at first, she assumed it would not matter who escorted her. As the date drew nearer, though, emotions she had kept at bay began to surface.
“When I thought about who would walk me down the aisle, trying to figure out what that looks like, the thought of it was surprisingly painful,” Fox said in an interview published on Sept. 12, 2025. Suddenly, what she once thought of as a minor detail became a powerful reminder of something missing from her life.
That emptiness was unexpectedly filled by a man she never imagined would be the one to take on such an important role. Her landlord, 79-year-old Gil Pulliam, had known Fox for years through their tenant-landlord relationship. She runs her own makeup artistry business out of a studio space in Cincinnati that Pulliam owns.
Over time, what began as a business connection grew into something warmer and more personal.

Fox reflected later that she “wouldn’t have thought in a million years” that the person to give her away at her wedding would be her landlord. Yet when Pulliam offered, the gesture felt genuine and deeply moving. His willingness to step into the role was not about formality. It was about care, empathy, and being present for someone who needed support on one of the most significant days of her life. Pulliam shared how the idea came about. He recalled to CBS News:
“So I went back up to ask Shacole if I could escort her down the aisle.”
He continued: “And she said, ‘Yes, yes, yes! And on and on and on.’”
His memory of her enthusiastic response reflected not only his generosity but also how much Fox longed for that connection. When her wedding day arrived, Fox married her partner Victor, surrounded by loved ones. The processional, once a source of pain and uncertainty, became the most meaningful moment of the ceremony.
“The music is playing and I’m getting ready to walk down the aisle and he grabbed my hand so tight,” Fox said of Pulliam, adding it was “a really good feeling… Yeah, it still is. Like a wound had been healed in my heart.”
What could have been a painful reminder of absence transformed into a celebration of chosen family and unexpected bonds. Fox expressed that the act of Pulliam walking her to her future husband did more than fill a tradition. It brought her peace and a sense of healing she did not realize she needed.
The story reminds us that family is not always defined by blood. Sometimes, the people who step forward during pivotal moments are the ones who leave the most significant mark.

Sometimes the most meaningful family bonds are the ones we create, not the ones we are born into. Did Shacole Fox’s story touch your heart? If so, then pass this on to others to remind them that love and support can come from the most surprising places!
