Never giving up is a lesson many of us should learn. Laine Hardy is a case study of just why this lesson is so important.
In 2018, Laine was eliminated from American Idol. For most people, the future would look bleak. But, not for Laine. After the judges told him he didn't have the necessary confidence, he went home with a mission in mind. He worked on becoming more confident in his natural talent. And it paid off.
He came back to Idol, but wasn't there to audition for a spot. He wanted to play guitar for Ashton Gill. But, the judges weren't about to let him walk away without a song. He auditioned again and earned himself a Golden Ticket.

Laine once again took the Idol journey. His strength and confidence helped him win over the judges and the viewers. He became a standout in the competition, with performances of songs by Sam Cooke and Elvis. All of his hard work paid off when he made it to the top eight.
He made it to that week with a famous Disney song with deep country roots. Laine performed it on Easter Sunday as part of "Disney Week".
He chose "Oo-De-Lally", a song featured in Robin Hood, a file from 1973.
It's the most well-known song from the movie, both written and performed by Roger Miller, an icon of country music. Even though it's highly popular, the song hasn't been remade all that often. This gave Laine the chance to make the song his own.

He decided to change things up. Instead of rendering it close to the original, Laine gave it a grittier sound, closer to rock and roll. The judges and the viewers got into his performance, clapping the entire way through. They lovee it from the get-go. After the song was over, Lionel Richie gave him praise for finding his own sound. Luke Bryan and Katy Perry put him squarely at the head of the competition with their comments.
