Cinephiles the world over have been gushing over A Star Is Born. The picture, which stars Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, and Sam Elliott, soared to the top of every critic’s must-see list. The film was also lauded by those in the entertainment industry, being nominated for several Academy Awards. At this year’s ceremony, Gaga and Cooper wowed audiences with a rendition of “Shallow,” the film’s signature song that later won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

While audiences were riveted by the beauty of the song’s lyrics, most couldn’t stop talking about how Gaga and Cooper seemed to be in love in real life. Sitting at a piano, the duo often sang cheek-to-cheek, nearly kissing at times. While it is not uncommon for costars to start dating after portraying fictional lovers, the situation with Gaga and Cooper is complicated because Cooper already has a girlfriend, model Irina Shayk, with whom he has a daughter. Audiences in attendance at the ceremony and those watching on television felt sorry for Irina, thinking that it was wildly inappropriate for Cooper to get so close to Gaga when his girlfriend was sitting in the theater watching the performance live. For her part, Irina was among the first to give a standing ovation to Gaga and Cooper’s performance.

Nevertheless, many people are still questioning whether Gaga and Cooper are dating in real life. Mel B, a singer with the Spice Girls, took to Twitter to express how she felt uncomfortable for Irina, and that she hoped Gaga and Cooper’s relationship was strictly professional. Comedian David Spade also took to social media, joking to his fans that the two were obviously in a romantic relationship.

After rumors began swirling that Gaga and Cooper were more than just friends, Gaga herself took to Twitter to comment on the performance. Addressing her fans, Gaga called Cooper a true friend and artistic genius. While not addressing if she and Cooper were a couple, the 32-year old singer said that they wanted audiences to feel joy when they watched the performance.
