In movie news, actress Kristen Stewart is set to play Princess Diana in an upcoming biographical drama film about her divorce, titled Spencer. Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film will follow the late royal as she arrives at the decision to divorce Prince Charles. Set to begin filming in early 2021, the story will take place over three days in 1992.

As reported by Deadline, the film will take a close look at the woman who Diana really was, and how such a big decision as leaving a loveless marriage and stepping away from royalty might occur. Larraín, who has experience directing films about strong women in positions of leadership—he directed 2016's Jackie, which starred Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy as she deals with her husband's assassination—spoke to Deadline about Lady Di.
He said:
"Diana is such a powerful icon, where millions and millions of people, not just women, but many people around the world felt empathy toward her in her life...We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen."

The film is written by Steven Knight and covers a critical weekend in the early ‘90s when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working

The movie will be set during Christmas at Sandringham estate, the location where the royal family usually spends the holiday season.
Larraín further discussed in the same interview other themes that the movie will examine:
"It's about finding herself, about understanding that possibly the most important thing for her is to be well and to be with herself and by herself...That's why the movie is called Spencer, which is the family name she had before she met Charlies."
Kristen Stewart is a big name in Hollywood and her acting career has only gone from strength to strength since her acclaimed role in Panic Room at just 12 years of age. Pushed to superstardom thanks to her role as Bella in the Twilight movie franchise, Stewart has since then taken on a mix of blockbuster and independent film roles. Recently, she was lauded for her role as Jean Seberg in the film Seberg, proving that she can take on biographical stories of real-life people.

Larraín discussed the casting choice, saying:
"Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need...The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it's very beautiful to see. I think she's going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature."
However, her casting choice has people divided. Some are unsure about an American woman playing a Brit, but others think Stewart is the perfect person to play a woman that's been vilified by the press. Her previous roles seem to confirm that she will be able to take on the role and deliver something stellar. In a previous biopic, actress Naomi Watts played Diana, while Emma Corrin will play her in the upcoming fourth season of The Crown.

Larraín explained that ultimately it was Diana's choice to turn down nobility for a normal life, and the love of her children, which inspired him to want to make the film. The movie is believed to also explore the connection Diana had with her sons William and Harry.
