The memorial was brought up first, officially, by L.A.'s mayor Eric Garcetti last week. He confirmed that a memorial was in the works, honoring Bryant, his daughter and the seven other victims of the tragic crash. He also said that a date hadn't been finalized yet, but that the Lakers, his office and Bryant's wife were talking it over. Now more details have been shared with the public.

As ET Online was told, the memorial is currently planned for February 24th. A lot of different venues were on the table, including the L.A. Coliseum and the Rose Bowl, but ultimately the Staples Center won, despite the fact that it can only fit about 20,000 people.

"There was conversations about possibly having the ceremony at the LA Coliseum to fit more people, but ultimately the Staples Center made the most sense as it was such a big part of Kobe’s life," ET's source said.

Not only the location will hold a special meaning, but also the date. 2/24 holds special symbolism for Kobe Bryant and his daughter: The 24 was his jersey number and 2 was his daughter's. This, together with the location, makes clear that the memorial will truly be hosted to pay tribute to the late star and his daughter.
