Kite Festival Takes Frightening Turn When Three-Year-Old Gets Carried Away By Gust Of Wind

The International Kite Festival in Hsinchu, Taiwan, was supposed to be a fun and memorable day for the community. Each year thousands of families come together for a day of enjoyment and to see who has the best kite-flying skills.

Unfortunately for one thrill-seeking family, the fun part got lost in the wind. The windy weather was perfect for flying kites, but the high-spirited climate would soon sink to the bottom when their three-year-old girl got caught in the tail of a kite and carried into the air by a gust of wind.

The weather was befitting the festival. The high winds leveled the playing field for all the competitors, so it would be the experience and skill of the participants that would separate the experts from the novices.

Things would soon take an unexpected and frightening turn as the tail of one kite wrapped around a three-year-old girl. Kites were already in the air thrashing about and another was being prepared for flight.

Suddenly a strong gust of wind lifted the long kite's tail in the air and catapulted the little girl skyward with it. The toddler was flung haphazardly about in the air, going up, down, and sideways – completely helpless.

As the three-year-old was flying uncontrollably in the air, she became everyone's daughter. Humanity was on full display as those nearby pitched in to bring her back down to earth.

As she descended within reach, the focused crowd reached for her and yanked her out of the air with all their might. The horrifying scene was captured on video and quickly went viral, racking up views in the millions and growing still.

With such violent thrashing about, it would seem that bad news of her condition was imminent. Despite appearances, however, the child suffered only minor injuries to her facial area. She was taken to the hospital and soon went home afterward. As a precaution, however, the event ended after this incident, reports the Taipei Times.

This will be a memorable event for her parents, but not for the reasons they anticipated. For an awful moment in time, about eight seconds according to the Taipei Times, the safety of their daughter was out of their control. They watched in horror as the wind tossed their child about like a rag doll. Thankfully, this situation ended on a positive note for the family.

This story is a poignant reminder of many things, not least of which that life is precious and precarious. This incident happened right out of thin air. Who would have anticipated that the tail of a kite would entrap a little girl and catapult her into the air. But it happened and serves as a reminder that circumstances–both good and bad–can change quickly.
