Kirstie Alley Fell In Love With John Travolta After Undisclosed Relationship With Patrick Swayze

Kirstie Alley broke into Hollywood with her role on the TV show "Cheers," which earned her both a Golden Globe and Emmy win. She later starred on the show "Veronica's Closet" while she also had a successful film career that included the movie "Look Who's Talking" and its subsequent sequels. She co-starred with John Travolta in the franchise and the pair were well-loved by the public for their roles as James and Mollie.

But only recently did Alley reveal that the pair became much closer on the set of the film than most people realized. Despite being married at the time, Alley formed such a strong connection with Travolta that they fell in love, according to her. However, they never took their love beyond a strong bond, out of respect to their spouses. The actress revealed this publicly during her time on the reality show "Celebrity Big Brother" in 2018, however, she has spoken about it in other interviews before.

What's more, Alley has also spoken of a secret relationship that she had with Patrick Swayze as well. The pair worked together on the 1985 miniseries "North and South" and hit it off immediately. While nothing came to light at the time, the actress opened up in a 2012 interview with Entertainment Tonight about their emotional relationship. Revealing they tried to avoid "going down that road" they did, however, fall in love according to her. But as with Travolta, the pair never became physical. Later on, the actress revealed that it wasn't for lack of trying on her part though. Let's take a look at Alley's secret romances with the two leading men.

As reported by Entertainment Tonight, back in 2012, Alley had an interview with Chris Jacobs where she talked about the powerful attraction she and Swayze had during the filming of the miniseries "North and South." She said:

"Both of us were married. We did not have an affair. But again, I think what I did was worse. Because I think when you fall in love with someone when you're married, you jeopardize your own marriage and their marriage. It's doubly bad."

Despite being friends with Lisa Niemi, Swayze's wife, Alley said she wasn't sure if Niemi was aware of the relationship between them. However, in her book "The Art of Men" Alley reveals that although the two never consummated their relationship, it wasn't for lack of trying on her part. ET reports that the actress wrote about a night of dancing and partying with Swayze during which she finally made her move on him. She recalled telling him:

"I want to make love with you. I just don't care anymore, let's just do it."

But ever the gracious gentleman, Swayze ceremoniously rejected Alley. He told her:

"No. Come on, you're drunk. Kirstie, you don't really want to do it. You're not that kind of girl."

While Alley said she doesn't know if Niemi knew about them, she added, "I was probably the least of Lisa's problems with Patrick."

While spilling the beans in the "Celebrity Big Brother" house, Alley tried to explain to the other housemates that it's quite natural to become very close to your co-star on set. In her and Swayze's case, they were away shooting "North and South" for a whole year. She also opened up about her love for Travolta while there.

Echoing candid details that Alley dropped about her love for Travolta on the Dan Wootton Interview podcast in 2018, People reported that she said she fell in love with her co-star in the late '80s and that the feeling was "mutual." However, she didn't act on it as she was already married to her second husband Parker Stevenson. She said:

“I will say it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, the hardest decision I’ve ever made because I was madly in love with him — we were fun and funny together.”

She added that "it wasn’t a sexual relationship because I’m not going to cheat on my husband," before adding that what she did was probably worse as she "let [herself] fall in love with him and stay in love with him for a long time."

In fact, after Travolta married Kelly Preston in 1991, the actress had words with Alley, which ultimately led her to let go of her love for Travolta. She said:

“Kelly came up to me, and they were married then, and she said, ‘Erm, why are you flirting with my husband?’ ... And that was sort of when I had to make a decision and that was pretty much the end of that.”

But despite having amazing chemistry, Alley thinks it wouldn't have worked with Travolta in the end as they're so alike: "John and I would have devoured each other ... It would be like two blazing stars that just fizzled out."

Nevertheless, the two remain close friends, with Travolta telling Us Weekly that Alley is his "best girlfriend." He added, "she's my soulmate." The star also said he'd be up for a "Look Who's Talking" reboot but only if Alley was on board as well.
