King Charles Rocks Cool Sunglasses For Rare Relaxed Outing With Younger Brother Prince Edward

King Charles III made a rare and heartening public appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, accompanied by his younger brother, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh. The 76-year-old monarch appeared relaxed and cheerful, wearing stylish tortoiseshell sunglasses and carrying a walking aid. The King and the Duke of Edinburgh are rarely seen out and about enjoying more casual rural engagements together, so many were happy to see the brothers together. His presence was met with warm applause from the attendees, reflecting the public's support during his health journey.

In February 2024, Charles publicly shared his cancer diagnosis, aiming to raise awareness. The monarch was lauded for being transparent about his health condition, with the media and public praising him in the days following his announcement for increasing awareness of prostate health and cancer. While 2024 saw Charles step back from his royal duties, he has since been making a slow and steady return to the public eye.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show, held annually on the private grounds of Windsor Castle since 1943, is a cherished event in the royal calendar. Unlike the more solemn events on the royal calendar each year, the Royal Windsor Horse Show is a more laid-back affair, making it a popular favorite among the royals. It was a particular favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who attended regularly until her final visit in 2022.

While he wasn’t a regular attendee and mostly attended to accompany his late mother, King Charles’s attendance in 2025 underscored his commitment to upholding family traditions and engaging with the public, even amidst personal health challenges. The day was made even more special because he was accompanied by Prince Edward, who is widely beloved by admirers of the royal family. Both King Charles and Prince Edward wore country-style jackets and matching ties.

While many enjoyed seeing King Charles out and about with his brother on May 17, 2025, chatting with staff and visitors, it wasn’t Prince Edward’s first time attending the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Duke of Edinburgh was spotted earlier in the week touring the showgrounds and meeting stallholders with his wife, Duchess Sophie. Although their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, had previously competed in the event, she was not in attendance this year. This came as no surprise as the Duke of Edinburgh is a longstanding supporter of equestrian events, and the Royal Windsor Horse Show in Berkshire attracts members of the royal family as participants and spectators.

King Charles has scaled back on royal engagements and public events amidst his cancer treatment. This joint appearance came ahead of Prince Edward’s significant royal duty, representing King Charles at the Inaugural Mass for Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City on May 18, 2025. Royal watchers had been eager to see which royal engagements the King would be able to attend as the summer’s calendar got underway. While his health issues had limited his attendance at many traditional events since 2024, it was reassuring to see him looking relaxed at the horse show.

The event lasts for four days, with many members of the royal family making appearances throughout the weekend. Annually, the Royal Windsor Horse Show remains a significant event, attracting over 50,000 visitors every year. The show is the only one of its kind in the United Kingdom to host international dressage competitions, show jumping, carriage driving and endurance riding. During her lifetime, the late Queen Elizabeth II was its patron.
