During a glittering State Banquet at Windsor Castle on July 8, 2025, King Charles III, 76, paid a heartfelt tribute to his eldest son, Prince William, in a speech that combined warmth, humor, and a sense of national pride. Hosted in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, the event saw King Charles and Queen Camilla formally welcome the visiting dignitaries, while also highlighting the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Conspicuously absent from the King’s remarks, however, was any mention of Prince Harry. The omission likely reflected the strained relationship between the father and son, which has remained tense since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and settled in Montecito, California.

Despite the ongoing divide, Prince Harry had voiced his hopes for healing. In a candid interview with the BBC, he shared, “I would love a reconciliation,” though he added that his father still “won’t speak” to him. However, he made it clear that he was ready to move on, saying, “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore, life is precious,” adding he has “forgiven” his family for their many “disagreements.”

The evening drew over 150 distinguished guests, and King Charles’s speech struck a deeply personal tone, especially when speaking about William and Catherine’s growing family. Beyond the royal family dynamics, the King also underscored the close diplomatic and cultural ties between Britain and France, calling attention to the “deep friendship” shared by both nations.

King Charles took a moment during the banquet to highlight the meaningful connection between Prince William and Windsor Castle, where the event was held. With the French president and his wife in attendance, Charles praised his eldest son for choosing to settle his family at Windsor, linking it to the site’s deep historical roots.

“The castle in which we meet this evening was begun by my ancestor – and your sometime countryman – William, Duke of Normandy, in the year 1070,” Charles noted, adding that it “remains the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.”

The King added:

“So it is perhaps rather appropriate that my son, the Prince of Wales, who shares that earlier William’s name, has made Windsor his home with his family, like so many of our predecessors.”

Prince William and Princess Catherine made Adelaide Cottage, located in Windsor Great Park, their main residence in 2022. The picturesque home, located near Lambrook School in Berkshire, allows their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – to enjoy a quieter upbringing outside of London. However, the family still frequently visits their Kensington Palace base.

The lavish banquet marked the first state dinner at Windsor Castle in over 10 years. Among other royals present were Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Anne, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, creating a striking royal lineup for the French state visit.
